Carter’s eyes burn with relief. His thoughts of Nathan and love and inappropriate touching pause. "Really?"

“Really.”

“I hope so.”

“He’s in the best hands now. We won’t let anything else happen to him. If he can pull through, you’ve saved him.”

Carter squeezes his eyes shut in an attempt to not cry. “We saved him. The three of us.”

“Guess we make a pretty good team then, huh?”

“Yeah,” Carter whispers. The hand on his back is so impossibly warm. He wonders if he could get away with slipping his sweater off and asking Nathan to put the hand back after so he can feel Nathan's skin on his. "Maybe we should stick together."

Those fingers on his back flex. At the same time, he swears he hears Nathan's breath hitch. Then, very quietly, Nathan says, "I'd like that."

He keeps the hand in place as they go quiet. It's easy for Carter to pretend things are back to how they were before. To pretend they're two idiots in love despite the hell around them. To pretend he trusts Nathan. To pretend they can have a happy ending.

And Carter hates himself for it, but he falls asleep feeling happier than he’s felt in a very long time.
