“Look forward to it.” I grinned and rose. “The visit, not the lecture.”

“I bet you got a few in your day.”

“You haven’t met my mom. She wasn’t patient enough for a lecture. But I’ve given a few to my little sister. Nora’s ten years younger than me.”

She chuckled. “I can picture Landon being a bossy big brother to Riley. He tries with Afton.”

I could picture it too. My chest tightened. I was getting to know them. Not just Emery, but everything that was important to her.

She walked me to the door. I didn’t want to move too fast. Tonight was supposed to be about her getting to know me. I was prepared to take this slow. Trying to kiss her might be a setback. But I lightly put my fingers under her chin. I didn’t miss the way she stiffened, but she let me tilt her head up. A wide, green gaze met mine.

“May I kiss you?” I asked, terrified she’d turn me down. “I promise I won’t go too far.”

She didn’t give me a hesitant nod or twist away from my touch. She stood on her tiptoes and slid a hand up my chest. I lowered my head enough that our lips met.

This was nothing like the wild clash of our bodies our first night together. This was a tentative touch of our lips. I didn’t open my mouth. I wanted to sweep my tongue inside, to taste her again. I knew she’d open for me. But I restrained. I kept my kiss light and pulled back.

Her eyes were dreamy, but when she focused, disappointment infused her expression.

I hated to leave her wanting, but—she wanted me. My ego surged. “See you at the game, Em.”

“Have a good night, Holden,” she said, her voice breathy.

I left, knowing I’d get a shitty night’s sleep as I replayed our first night together while I was alone in bed.
