“That’s the idea,” he told her.

She laughed.

“What?” he asked.

“Oh, it’s just that in ballet, keeping your hips level is kind of the name of the game,” she told him. “That and pointing your feet. If my old ballet teacher ever saw me moving like that, her head would explode.”

“Well then it’s a good thing she’s not here,” he told her. “Just forget about those rules.”

“Easy for you to say,” she laughed. “But I’ll try.”

He held her hands right where they were and watched her start to move with him.

At first, she was as stiff as before. But after a few minutes, she relaxed and started to really move.

“That’s it,” he murmured encouragingly. “Now get your feet in a wider stance so you can move more.”

She moved her feet apart and started up again, dropping her core a little more and working with the music, stretching and contracting with the rhythm as if she were controlling the music, not the other way around.

“That’s really nice,” he told her, lust starting to simmer as he watched her move.

She winked at him, gave an extra shimmy, then giggled.

A warm sense of happiness washed over him.

This is temporary,he reminded himself.Don’t get attached.

But it didn’t matter. He felt like himself when he was with Alexis, only better, more patient. Ironically, his strait-laced little rule follower seemed to make him more fun.

He let go of her hands, and she began doing all the moves on the hologram again, only now she was into it, nailing it like she belonged onstage with a band.

Her hips sank and rose, swaying as she tossed her hair and flung her arms toward the stars, an expression of pure joy on her soft, sweet face. She was inhabiting the music, allowing it to move through her.

Tiago forgot to dance. And when the hologram exploded into light, signifying that Alexis had hit one hundred points, he didn’t mind a bit.

Even his competitive nature had been tamed by the sweet little Terran.

She turned to him, smiling hard, her eyes luminous with pride.

Tiago felt like he had been living his life in total darkness and someone had finally shone a light on him.

ALEXIS

An hour later, Alexis sat on a soft blanket on the beach, looking out over the ocean.

Just as Oberon had promised, the storm had moved on. The sky was a brilliant blue, and the cerulean water glistened all the way to the horizon.

The rush of the waves merrily crashing into the lava cliffs and the happy chatter of the Center staff made a lovely backdrop.

On the blanket beside her, Tiago was demolishing his lunch, eating as much fruit in a sitting as she would in a week.

“Sorry,” he said suddenly, his mouth full. “I’m used to eating alone.”

“That’s okay,” she told him. “It makes the meal more fun when you eat it with such gusto.”

She didn’t tell him that it also made it easier for her to eat her modest portions when she saw his.
