As the steam evaporated from the mirror, Alexis was transfixed by her appearance.

Her belly was distended, and her breasts swollen, the nipples darker than usual. Small bruises darkened her skin here and there from the frenzy.

“I’m sorry,” Tiago said, noticing her looking at the mirror. “Do you want me to ask Oberon to get rid of the mirror?”

She shook her head mutely.

Though she wouldn’t have believed it possible half a year ago, looking at her big belly made her happy. If her body could carry new life, who was she to judge what it looked like?

She felt womanly somehow, though she was no more or less a woman than before.

“You are so beautiful,” Tiago said, his deep voice sending shivers down her spine as he stood behind her, wrapping his arms around her to span her belly with his own hands.

“I’ve never felt more at home inside my own body,” she said truthfully.

“You just needed a little company in there,” he teased.

She smiled at him in the mirror, loving the way they looked together, his ruby toned skin and beautiful horns, her dark hair and bright eyes.

“I wonder what she’ll look like,” she mused. “Maybe she’ll want to dance.”

The little one kicked at Tiago’s hand.

“Clearlymy son is a fighter,” Tiago teased, winking at her. “He’s already practicing his sparring.”

“Let’s go find something to eat,” Alexis decided.

He helped her dress, and they padded outside onto the sand in their bare feet.

The beach cottage clearly had not been intended for sleeping in. Alexis figured it was just part of the setting. But Oberon had turned it into a bedroom suite on the fly.

And now he had set out an enormous picnic brunch on a table in the shade of the palms, overlooking the ocean.

Massive platters of glistening fresh fruit, towers of pancakes, endless links of sausage, mountains of biscuits, skewers of chicken, steak and vegetables, and pitchers of juice and coffee all competed for space on the pretty turquoise tablecloth.

Tiago led her over to sit in front of an empty plate, and immediately began serving food onto it for her.

“Any four green dishes, three white dishes and three protein dishes on this table and your choice of unlimited fruit, vegetables and milk will complete your daily food scaffold. Congratulations,” her bracelet announced.

“Good heavens,” she said.

“Maltaffian pregnancies are fast,” Tiago reminded her. “And Maltaffian babies aren’t small. If you can, just listen to your body and eat as much as you want. I’m not sure the bracelet can keep up, and you definitely need to eat a lot.”

Alexis laughed and took a bite of steak from a skewer, enjoying the delicious flavor and not trying to worry if it had more fat or salt than it should. For as long as she was pregnant, she was relinquishing her role as a food detective.

“Hey there,” Dr. Pan said, approaching them.

She wore her usual lab coat, but underneath she had on a pretty sundress, perfect for a beach picnic.

“Hi,” Alexis said, moving to stand.

“No, no,” Dr. Pan said. “Don’t get up. You’re doing exactly what you should be doing.”

“Join us,” Tiago told the doctor.

“Don’t mind if I do,” she said with a smile, sitting across from Alexis. “Oberon has kept me on top of your readings, so I’ll just do vitals quickly after breakfast. How are you feeling?”

“Incredible,” Alexis laughed, grabbing a slice of watermelon from a platter. “And hungry.”
