Chapter Four

Logan

I pulled into the driveway of my new house in Lake Drive and walked into the empty living room. The place didn’t feel like home, yet. All I owned was a camp chair, a card table, a cheap TV, a mattress on the floor, and my duffle full of clothing. I moved here less than two weeks ago and I’d yet to go out shopping for furniture of any kind. At the moment, I was renting with the option to buy, and I was reluctant to put down too many roots until I was certain working for Cole Security would pan out. So, I put off furniture shopping.

I’d been a bit of a mess since everything went down with Chrissy. Breaking up in the way we did so soon after my discharge fucked me up. It was my cousin, Liam, who suggested I move across the country, to get some distance from her, and start afresh. His wife even hooked me up with a job.

It turned out I knew Jackson Cole and his business partner, Mark, from a couple of missions we worked on together in Iraq. The fact that they knew me a little and knew my skillset meant they were happy to take me on. Now I was waiting for an assignment. It seemed all was quiet on that front right now.

Luckily,I had something—or someone—else to focus my attention on.

I was attracted to Aria. Not only her curvaceous body, but her no-nonsense attitude coupled with her intelligence and her obvious innocence was intoxicating. Her desire for a quiet life while, at the same time, becoming an accomplished veterinarian to the point where she wanted to run her own business and be self-sufficient was attractive, too. She was passionate in so many ways, even if she didn’t realise it.

The part of me that made me a successful SEAL—the daredevil that lived to take risks—wanted to take away her innocence and show her what a real man could give her, both in and out of the bedroom. But I didn’t want to treat Aria like a rebound. She wasn’t a fast woman by any means, and she deserved better.

Fuck. The mere thought of her was turning me on. I needed to stop thinking of all the things I wanted to do with her and to her or I’d be walking around with a perpetual hard-on and blue balls.

I picked up the small, handheld dumbbell I owned and spent fifteen minutes pumping each arm. A small workout would wash away all the pent-up sexual tension in my body, for sure. Then I pictured Aria in workout clothes and having a go at my dumbbells.

Fuck.

I tried push ups, but pictured Aria beneath me as I drove myself into her. So, I flipped onto my back and tried sit ups.

How would she look straddled above me, her head thrown back and her beautiful tits pushed out as she rode out her pleasure?

Jesus Christ, Logan.

I jogged upstairs, took my clothes off, and turned on the shower. I adjusted the temperature then stepped under the spray and allowed its soothing, massaging strength to relax my muscles. I closed my eyes and pushed my face under the flow before leaning forward to wet my hair.

No matter what I did, I continued to think about her. My crotch ached. I gritted my teeth as I rested my forehead against the cream-coloured tiles and curled my hands into fists. The more I tried to get Aria out of my head, the more she got stuck in there.

I lowered my hand towards my cock. I curled my fingers around my length . . . then the doorbell rang.

I roared out my rage. I had achieved nothing! I slammed the shower off and threw a towel around my waist, followed by one around my shoulders.

“I’m coming!” I shouted as the doorbell rang again and I stormed downstairs. I pulled the door open to find my cousin standing on my stoop.

Liam looked me up and down with a smirk. “Did I interrupt something?”

“My shower,” I grumbled.

“Is that all?” He chuckled into his hand.

“Fuck you, Liam,” I growled. “What do you want?”

“I thought we could hang out and have some guy time. How about it?” Liam held up a six-pack of local beers and a takeout bag from my favorite local burger joint.

I stepped away from the door and left it hanging open. “Let me get dressed.”

“Please do,” Liam insisted.

I went and dug through my bag and pulled out a white T-shirt and a pair of sweats. I quickly changed in the next room, then settled myself into the spare camp chair next to Liam as he flicked the TV onto the baseball game. “What have you bought me?”

“A brisket and bacon burger. Your favorite.” Liam deposited the wrapped parcel in front of me.

“Did you get them to hold the ranch?”

“Of course, I did,” Liam said as he rolled his eyes. “I can’t believe you still don’t like ranch dressing.”
