I drew my big toe through the sand. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

“Aria, don’t chicken out now. He seems like such a cool guy,” Zoey said.

“I’m not chickening out.” I paused and narrowed my eyes at her. “Wait. How do you know he’s a cool guy?”

My two friends glanced at one another and grimaced.

“We may have invited him to our beach party,” Lily admitted.

“We also may have broken into your phone to do so. I have skills.” Zoey wiggled her fingers.

I baulked at them. “How on earth did you break into my phone?”

“You used your date of birth as your passcode,” Lily said, rolling her eyes.

“Yeah, you do need a better passcode, babe,” Zoey agreed.

“I can’t believe you two!” Before I could berate them about invading my privacy, we were joined by the man in question.

“Hey there, ladies,” Logan said.

“Hey, Logan. I’m Lily.” Lily batted her eyelashes at him, while Zoey said a cool “hey,” to him.

He was looking gorgeous in a casual button-up shirt and tan chino shorts. My heart thudded when he flashed a smile that was all for me.

“Hi.”

“Hey.” I pushed a strand of my hair behind my ear and felt a shy smile of my own tease the corners of my mouth.

“Thanks for the invite.”

“Okay.” I didn’t have the heart to tell him my friends had invited him and not me. How could I be mad at my friends when I was so happy he was here?

We kept staring and smiling at each other like idiots.

“Who wants hotdogs and s’mores?” Lily asked, breaking through our moment.

Logan frowned. “That’s an interesting combination, but okay.”

“Hotdogs with relish first, followed by s’mores for dessert,” Zoey verified.

“Sure. That sounds nice, Zoey,” I said.

She pulled out a wire rack and positioned it over the campfire. “Dogs’ll be cooked soon. Occupy yourselves in the meantime.” She shooed Logan and I away.

The two of us made our way down to the water.

“I think your friend Zoey’s playing matchmaker with us,” Logan said, glancing back at my friends.

I peeked at him out the corner of my eye. “She’s a little bit late, don’t you think?”

Logan smiled. “Yeah, I do.”

We came to a stop at the water’s edge. “I’ve been trying to fight my feelings for you because I’m not sure where they could ever go given that I live up in Brooklyn and you’re down here. I like you a lot, Logan. I’ve never had feelings like this before. What are we supposed to do when my three weeks of vacation are up?”

“We’ll figure it out. I’m more than willing to visit you in New York and you’re welcome to visit me anytime. That is, if you’re willing to try the long-distance thing?”

“I’d be open to it,” I said with a nod. “Just like I was open to your suggestion about a swimsuit.”
