“Aria. I can’t go to a hospital. Please, I’m begging you, sweetheart.”

I took in his pained face and the blood. With a shake of my head, I stepped forward. “Fine, I’ll help you. On one condition . . . you tell me what the hell is going on.”

“You know I—”

“Ah-ah!” I snapped straight over him. “I don’t give a flying shit if you’re not supposed to. I don’t care about the rules at this point. You’ve come to me for help, which inadvertently involves me. No more keeping me in the dark.”

Logan sighed. After a few tense moments, he said, “Okay. I’ll tell you everything.”

I shook my finger in his face. “Promise me!”

“I swear on everything that means the world to me. That’s you, by the way.” He grinned at me.

I rolled my eyes. “Stop trying to butter me up.”

I began to peel his shirt away from his gash, which was deep. Then I observed his pale features and when I touched his skin, it felt clammy. I stopped being a bitch and my medical training instantly kicked in. “We need to get you on the table.”

I helped Logan stumble to one of the examination tables. He pushed himself up and laid down on his back. I took some bandage shears in hand and cut his shirt off him. “Now, the desire to sleep is going to be strong, but Logan, I need for you to stay awake, alright?”

“Okay, babe.”

“You’ve lost quite a bit of blood. Since you won’t go to a proper hospital, and I only have animal blood here, I’m going to have to give you an iron transfusion and a local anaesthetic so I can work on you.”

“Do what you need to do. I trust you.”

I grabbed a bag of intravenous iron infusion, a drip line with a needle, and a bottle of local anaesthetic along with a syringe for it. I drew the solution into the syringe and set it aside. Picking up the IV syringe, I inserted it into Logan’s vein on his right wrist. Ordinarily, an intravenous line would be put into a person’s left arm since most people were right-handed. However, I needed the space to work on his left shoulder, so the right one it was.

I set the machine to slowly pump the solution into Logan’s body and washed my hands before gloving up and turning my focus onto his shoulder. I picked up the syringe with the local anaesthetic solution inside it. “I’m warning you, this procedure is going to hurt, though hopefully not as much as it could once I get this into you.”

Logan grimaced and groaned as I applied the needle to various points on the injured area. “I trust you,” he repeated.

I began my work on his shoulder and wrinkled my nose up at him. “You don’t need to tell me what’s going on while I work on you. That’s a bit unfair.”

“I’m supposed to be undercover . . . posing as an employee for the owner of that club in Harlem. He’s a gang leader and a drug runner. A senator’s son has gotten mixed up with them. I’m supposed to befriend him and get him out alive.”

My mouth fell open. I took my time to absorb this information before I asked, “How did this happen, then?”

“We got into a brawl with a rival gang.”

I let out a long sigh. “You have to do this as part of your job?”

“Yes. This is what we’re being paid to do.” Logan studied my unsettled expression. “I’m not really in the gang, Aria. But I have to play the part until I can convince this kid to get out.”

“You had to find a career being a superhero, didn’t you? You couldn’t have been a doctor or something?” I grumbled.

“Like you, sweetheart?” Logan chuckled and then cringed when the action caused him pain.

“I’m a veterinarian, not a doctor.”

“You’re an animal doctor, and you’re stitching me up. Same thing.”

“You’re lucky I love you,” I mumbled under my breath.

He heard me nonetheless. He managed to move his fingers enough to stroke my arm. “I love you, too, Aria. I know how hard this situation has been on you. As much as it pains me to say this, maybe I’m not the right person for you.”

I gasped as tears stung my eyes. “That’s not true.”

“I hate seeing you hurting. I hate being the one who’s hurting you.” Logan leaned up on one elbow, taking my stitching tools with him.
