“Logan, don’t move!”

He ignored me and reached his right hand over to cup my face. “My life is tearing you apart. But it’s a life I want to lead. I want to protect people, I want to stop bad things from happening, and I can continue to do that with this company. I know you would never ask me to stop, just like I would never ask you to stop following your dreams. But I’m not someone who can be idle or be one of those veterans who ends up in construction or something. Maybe that’s the guy you need.”

I shook my head vehemently. “No, Logan. I’m not letting you give up on us that easily. So what if you’re not a regular guy?I have feelings for you I’ve never experienced before. You’re you, and I loveyou. Not a construction worker, you. So, I need to get used to what it’s like being a military spouse—well, sort of. I can do that, especially with people like Natalie Dempsey in my corner.”

Logan narrowed his eyes. “Natalie?”

“She came to New York to check up on me, to tell me I had a friend in common. A whole group of them, in fact.”

Logan smiled. “She’s right.”

“So am I about us.” I pounded my fist on the edge of the examination table. “I’m not letting you go without a fight, Logan Newcombe.”

He leaned his face close to mine. “Is that right?”

He tried to kiss me, but I shoved him back. “Oh no, you don’t. Not until I’m finished with your damn shoulder. Now, lay back and hold still.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Logan said with all the pomp of a military official.

I finished stitching him up and gave him an injection of pain killers. “You’re going to have to rest up for a bit. I suggest you come to my place and sleep.”

“I don’t think that’s—” One sharp look from me and he hastily shut his mouth.

“The iron infusion and the shock to your body, not to mention the blood loss, will have sapped your energy.”

Logan chuckled at my choice of words. “Like Super Mario?”

“Yes. Like Super Mario. We certainly don’t want you losing a life to a Kooper Trooper, now, do we?” I shook my head but smiled despite myself. Logan would always be charming to me, even when he was infuriating.

Logan smirked. “No, we wouldn’t want that.”

I began to clean up, determined not to leave a trace of evidence that I had done this highly illegal procedure in my place of employment.

“Hey,” Logan murmured, catching my arm. “Do I get that kiss now?”

I leaned over him and allowed him to plaster his lips to mine. As soon as he did, I was his once again. I somehow knew I always would be. Logan was my everything—my home, the man I felt safest with.

“Take me to yours, sweetheart.”

“Okay,” I whispered with a smile.

I pulled back the covers of my queen-sized bed and eased Logan down onto the mattress. I fluffed his pillow and tucked him in, and then I hung up the iron infusion bag so it could finish infusing into him.

Logan watched as I made sure Mama was comfy in her little bed. “You’ve still got Mama, then?”

“Yeah, until she has her puppies.” I squeezed my eyes shut as I said it.

Logan noticed my pained expression and coaxed me to sit on the edge of the bed. “Aria, keep her. You love her, she loves you, and I can’t think of a better owner for her. I think it would be good for both of you.”

“I have been toying with the idea of putting in an adoption submission for her,” I said as I wrung my hands together.

“Then do it. I can see even the thought of letting her go has got you all mixed up inside. Adopt her.”

“Okay, I’ll adopt her.” I smiled as I let him stroke his hand through my long, red tresses.

“See how happy that instantly made you?” Logan cupped my face in his hand. “Make more decisions that make you smile.”
