“What are you so afraid of?” I pulled back from the counter, tears burning my eyes, the shock of his truth destroying me. “Why won’t you open up to me?”

Augustus grumbled to himself.

“Excuse me?”

“Because that’s not me. I don’t open up to anyone, ever.”

“Why not?”

At first, I was oblivious to the small crowd slowly beginning to gather around us, but now I saw them watching us fighting in the hotel lobby like they were watching the latest sporting match. Someone was even filming us on their phone.Fucking great. So now the British tabloids didn’t have to tap people’s phones because they had freelance wannabe journalists in the general population who could make their job a million times easier and my life a million times tougher.

I hushed my trembling voice. “I want you to be real with me, Aug.”

“Leave.”

When I stayed glued to my spot, disbelieving his actions, Augustus threw his hand toward the door. “You are causing a scene.Leave.”

My entire body was stiff as I walked out of the hotel and called myself a cab.

I wouldnevercrack his shell.

I wouldneverknow the real viscount underneath the shallow, sex-driven exterior.

Could I be satisfied with one of my relationships only being physical?

I wasn’t sure if I could be that kind of woman for long.

CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT

All the fight had left my body when I reached my apartment building. I was exhausted and sad. All I wanted to do was watch the silly English showEastEndersand chill out. I ordered a bucket of crispy chicken and fries as well as a bucket of ice cream and knocked on Jeremy’s door.

Riva answered with her regular cheer. “Hey, babe, it’s Sienna. Hi, girl.” She pecked me on the lips.

“Hey. Do you two want to share my food?”

“Definitely. It smells amazing,” Riva gushed.

“Hey, sugar.” Jeremy was across the room in a couple of strides and kissing me hello. “It’s nice of you to bring your dinner to share with us.”

“It’s nothing.” I shrugged. I needed to hang out with them after the shitshow at the hotel. I shouldn’t have even been hungry, given I’d had an amazing lunch with my best friend. But whenever I felt crappy, I liked to eat shitty food.

Riva put the ice cream in the freezer for later. “I’ll go and wash,” she said as she made her way to the bathroom.

Setting the bucket onto the countertop, I dug some napkins out of one of Jeremy’s drawers. I felt him behind me, hugging me and kissing my shoulder. “What’s the matter, Sienna? You don’t seem right.”

I melted against him with a sigh. “I had a rather public fight with Augustus.”

“What did the little prick do?” Jeremy growled.

I shrugged. “I guess I shouldn’t have tried to push him to go for a walk in the park with me.”

Jeremy chuckled. “It’s not really his style, sweetheart.” When he felt me tense, he hugged me tighter. “That’s not everything, is it?”

I turned to face my gorgeous neighbor. “Is it too much to ask that he like me for more than sex? I want to know him. I want him to know me. I want depth.”

“Depth can be a hard thing for some folks to give freely, sweetheart. There’s a lot about Augustus you don’t know. Backing him into a corner and pushing him on something he’s not ready for isn’t a fair thing to do to him. He hides for a reason.” Was Jeremy taking Augustus’ side?

I narrowed my eyes. “What reason?”
