Page 60 of Desiring Them

A silver sedan pulled up to the curb beside us, which allowed me to avoid Riva’s question. “Here’s our ride.”

The car's interior was immaculate, and I was glad I’d booked on a silver service app. I’d grown accustomed to the fancy cars Augustus had been sending me home in, so now I wanted to feel a little spoiled after a long day at the office.

I sank back against the leather seat and stared at the city passing by outside. Christmas was only a few weeks away, and the silly season—what the British called the craziness that occurred in the lead-up to Christmas Day—was truly beginning to affect people. I had less than a week left with Ruben before he had to go back to the USI wished he could stay until right before Christmas, but he also had a job to get back to.

“I love Christmas, don’t you?” Riva’s question cut through my thoughts.

“Yeah, it’s a beautiful time of the year.” I turned my attention on her and took in her China-doll skin and red hair highlighted by flecks of gold. She was a stunning young woman, model-like herself with her slim figure.

Okay. Maybe I did like Riva.

I reached out and touched Riva’s hair. “Do you dye your hair?”

“No, it’s all-natural.”

“It’s so pretty,” I gushed.

Her green eyes penetrated my chocolate brown ones, and she leaned into my touch, making me want to make out with her.

“You and your boyfriend should hang out with us when we get home.” Riva hesitated. “That is… unless you two want some alone time.”

“I’ll see what Ruben says.” I hoped Ruben would agree because I definitely wanted something to happen tonight.

The car swerved slightly, making us much more alert.

I leaned toward the driver. “Whoa, what are you doing?”

“My apologies. There was debris on the road,” he said, bringing the car back to the lane.

I leaned back again. “No problem.”

“I’m stuffed from lunch, but I’ll bet our men will be starving for some food. D’ya think we should order something in? Maybe make it a double dinner date?” Riva asked.

“I like that idea. I, too, am stuffed from lunch. But it will be cool for us all to hang out.”

The car swerved again.

“What the bloody hell is this driver doing?” Riva exclaimed as she grabbed the handle above her door.

“I have no idea. There can’t be more debris on the road.” I pushed forward again. “Hey, what is your problem? Why can’t you drive straight?”

“I’m sorry, I’m distracted.”

“By what?”

“By you. You’reher.”

I frowned. “Excuse me?”

“Theviscount’slatest plaything.”

I gasped loudly. Hisplaything? No one called me aplaything.I was so much more than that. I was an intelligent, strong, and independent woman. A successful woman who was a sister, a daughter, and a brilliant girlfriend. “Who the hell do you think you are? You have no right to comment on my life. You don’t know the first thing about me and my relationships.”

The driver chuckled. “When you date one of the royals, you’re pretty much fair game. Or didn’t you realize, Miss Beachley?”

I was so angry I was about to explode. “You’d better keep your eyes on the damn road and get us home safely, or I’ll have the full weight of the royal family come down on your ass.”Yeah right. As if I had any pull with those folks. It was an empty-as-hell threat, but he didn’t need to know that.

Before the car had even stopped,I was jumping out. Riva got out, and I kicked a stone at the car as it drove away. “You’d do well to ignore gossip.”
