“That’s great, right?” Ethan asked as if trying to read the room.

“It is, but it still doesn’t help me to understand why he even showed up at my place yesterday,” Ella admitted.

“Did he give any reason as to why he just showed up at your condo?” Linc asked.

“He said that he missed me, especially at night,” she whispered that last part.

“Tell me that you and James weren’t together,” Ethan demanded.

“No,” she insisted, “that’s why this is all so strange. I don’t know what he meant by saying that because we were never together in that way. I knew that he said he was developing feelings for me, but I told him that I didn’t return them. I thought that I had made myself clear. The officer said that James wasn’t well when they picked him up. He said that James seemed agitated as if he had gone off his meds or something.”

“Was he on medication of some sort?” Linc asked.

“No clue, but I really didn’t know him well enough to know of any medical conditions. Either way, he’s in custody now and he can’t hurt any of us again. They want to know if I’ll press charges,” she breathed.

“And you told them yes, right?” Ethan asked. “You can’t just let James get away with this. If you don’t press charges, he’ll be right back out on the streets again and you won’t be safe,” he said.

“I know that, but I hate doing this to him,” she admitted.

“You’ll be doing the right thing,” Linc assured. “If he is off his meds, as the detective said, maybe this will be the push he needed to get help.”

“He’s right, honey,” Ethan said. “Plus, it will give us the fresh start that the three of us need,” he said.

“Fresh start?” Ella asked.

“Yeah—see, Ethan and I have decided to get hitched,” Linc shared.

“Oh, I see,” Ella whispered. “Well, I’m very happy for you both,” she said. Ella tried to stand and Linc pulled her back down into his body.

“Thank you,” Linc whispered into her ear. “But I think you need to let us finish before you go running off.”

“Finish what? Telling me about how happy the two of you will be? I’d appreciate you not rubbing my nose in your relationship, Linc,” she said.

“That’s the problem,” Ethan said. “You never thought that you were a real part of this relationship, did you, honey? But you are. You have been from the start.”

“He’s right,” Linc said. “We’re all a part of this. Marry me, honey,” he said.

“Marry you? But you just said that you two were getting married,” she reminded.

“We were hoping that you’d marry both of us, Ella,” Ethan said. “We’ll have a commitment ceremony, the three of us if you’ll agree to have both of us. We want to build a family and Linc and I think that the three of us will make a pretty damn good one too.”

“A family?” she asked.

“Yeah—how about it?” Linc asked. “Marry us and be our family, honey.” He sounded like he was telling her what to do instead of asking, but he could tell from the beautiful smile on her face that she had already made up her mind. She was going to tell them yes. Ella was going to be theirs.

“I’ll marry you both,” she agreed. “I’d like to build a family with you both.” Linc and Ethan picked her up from her seat, spinning around with her, and Linc’s whole world finally felt right. She had made them both happier than either of them ever imagined that they’d be. She’d put no limits on their love and that was more of a gift than either Linc or Ethan could have hoped for.

The End
