“A lot of shirtless selfies,” he said against her hair, and she breathed out a laugh. “I got in contact with some gyms here.”

She tipped her head back in interest. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. It would take me a while to build up a list of in-person clients, but I’m going to start virtual training and coaching too.”

“You’ve thought a lot about this. Done a lot of homework.”

He playfully glowered at her. “It’s amazing what can be accomplished when you ask for help. I even have an accountant now.”

“Like a full-blown adult.” She dragged her thumb over the slash in his eyebrow. “Now I’m the one who feels inadequate.”

He bent down, skimming the top of his nose along hers, his lips so close she could feel his breath on her cheek. “Never. You’re perfect the way you are.”

“So are you,” she said, tilting up to meet his mouth, but as he brushed against her top lip, Farid’s voice echoed off the walls around them.

“What do we have here?”

Mike broke away, holding his arm out as he stepped in front of Sam. The natural protector. And big dummy that he ever thought he couldn’t provide her with anything. He’d only ever given her security and love, exactlywhat she needed.

“Am I interrupting something?” Farid asked, cocking his head to the side. He held up his phone. “I said half an hour. I’m not that late.”

Mike let out an audible breath. “Are you—” He pivoted to Sam, the light in his eyes dowsed. “Do you have a date?”

Behind him, Farid tossed his hands out. “Yeah, don’t we have a date?”

Sam cast her friend a death glare to silence him as she held on to Mike’s shoulders. “This is bad timing.”

“You’re right. I shouldn’t have come here. I didn’t realize you’d…” Mike pointed toward Farid with the flowers. “Sorry.”

“No. No.” Sam captured his wrist, staying him. “Farid is my friend.” She waved for him to step over. “Farid, this is Mike.”

Farid, a good three or four inches shorter than Mike, scrutinized him up and down before saying to Sam, “This the guy from the summer?” When she nodded, he pouted. “What happened to if you can’t fuck ’em, fuck ’em?”

Mike bounced his attention between the two. “Fuck ’em?”

“Does this mean we’re not going dancing?” Farid asked, and Mike seemed to shrink in size.

“You were going dancing? But you only sway.”

“Only sway?” Farid repeated, brushing his dark hair back from his face, craning his head side to side. “Why am I even here right now? I feel like I’ve been duped.”

“Farid is going through a breakup too,” Sam explained to Mike, and at his pained expression, she backtracked. “With his boyfriend.” Then she said to Farid, “Mike surprised me. He came to apologize.”

Farid gestured to how Sam held on to Mike. She couldn’t get close enough. If she could, she’d jump into his pocket like a baby kangaroo. “And I guess you accepted it.”

Mike angled his head down to Sam. “No, she hasn’t, actually.”

“Because we were interrupted.” She eyed Farid, and he waved at them.

“By all means, continue. I’ll be inside drinking your wine.”

“I don’t have any,” she said, staring up at Mike.

Farid grumbled as he made his way into her apartment, “My god.”

“So, you and Farid…” Mike started.

“Are friends,” Sam finished for him.
