And he had no idea how to fix it.

“It’s okay,” he said after a moment. “You shouldn’t have to guard what you say. As much as I hate him for not being here for me and my brothers, there’s a part of me that’s happy that he was there for you.”

“I don’t think you’d feel that way if we weren’t sleeping together, Jackson. I mean…come on.”

He hated the way she was describing their relationship like it was purely physical.

Unfortunately, she had a point.

If she were anyone else, he’d probably have a lot of issues with Cash being there for her instead of him and his family. And he had no idea what to do with that.

“Maybe,” he admitted. “I don’t know, and now I feel like I’m being shallow.”

“No. You’re being honest, and it’s one of the things I like most about you,” she told him with a sad smile.

“So, where does that leave us? The last thing I want to do is pressure you into a relationship that you don’t want.”

Even though he kind of did.

“I think we can both agree that there’s no way to avoid seeing each other. As you pointed out, our lives are very intertwined right now.”

He nodded.

“I really do enjoy the time we spend together and I’d like for that to continue until it’s time for me to go. But if it’s too much for you…”

“No,” he said fiercely. “I’d rather have you in my life for a little while than not have you there at all.”

Leaning in, he kissed her. There was more emotion there—passion, arousal, sadness, regret—it was so much that it threatened to consume him. When they broke apart, the hopeless look on her face nearly brought him to his knees. He placed a soft kiss on the tip of her nose before taking her hand in his and starting to walk again.

For tonight, they’d enjoy a quiet moonlit walk on the pier.

And maybe head back to his apartment for a little sexy alone time.

But come tomorrow, Jackson vowed he would find a way to work through this bullshit in his head and convince Savannah that they were worth taking a chance on.
