“But I need to know, Savannah. I need to know how you feel about me.”

When she went to speak, he immediately stopped her with a finger to her lips because he wanted them to be clear on something.

“And I don’t want you to say something that you think I want to hear, but I also don’t want excuses.” Taking one of her hands in his, he placed it on his chest, directly over his heart. “I know you’re scared, and I know that there is a lot going on in our lives right now. You never have to be afraid to be honest with me, okay?”

She nodded and then Jackson held his breath.

“If we had met at any other time or under any other circumstances, this would be so much easier…”

And just like that, his heart broke.

“It’s no secret that I have trust issues,” she whispered. “But I also have a hard time dealing with emotional situations. I tend to just…shut down.” Slowly, she pulled her hand away from him. “If ever there was someone to fall in love with, it’s you, Jackson. I have loved our time together and being with you…well…this is the happiest I’ve ever been, and it’s confusing because this is such a sad time in our lives.”

It was his turn to nod because he understood exactly what she meant.

“I honestly don’t know if I could have gotten through this last month without you. These next few days or…however long Cash lasts…are going to be devastating. I can’t focus on anything else but that. I’m sorry.”

It was stupid to have hope, but…he did.

Knowing what he knew about her—and even by her own admission—she compartmentalized things, particularly her feelings. So, he could wait and be patient.

Reaching up, he cupped her face and kissed her and was relieved when she kissed him back. When they broke apart, he rested his forehead against hers.

“I will always be here for you,” he said gruffly. “You’re not going through this alone. Remember that.”

“I know,” she replied, but her voice was weak and a little shaky.

“I love you, beautiful girl, and we’re going to get through this. Together.”

He felt her tears before he saw them, and he pulled her close and let her cry.

And maybe, just maybe, he shed a few of his own.
