I was about to open my mouth to speak, but my mother came barreling in.

“She’s gone.”

“What?’

“I think she may have jumped from the window because she is gone. She left her phone and her purse. She is out in this storm.”

Ethan and I looked at each other. I could see the welling regret in his eyes, and I knew that my previous claim had been right. He wasn’t mad at his sister.

“We need to go find her,” my mother said, panicking.

If Jade had left her things here, she wasn’t going to bolt, so she must have gone somewhere to think. If my assumptions were correct, I knew where she had gone.

I pulled my keys out of my pocket. “I think I know where she is. You two stay here in case she comes back. I will let you know once I find her.”

It was less than 72 hours after Jade Masters had returned to Riverroad, and everything had just gone from bad to worse to catastrophic.
