Chapter 5 - Ethan: All Grown Up

I heard the rev of a motorcycle from outside. No one on my street owned a motorbike. I walked to my kitchen window and peeped outside.

Of. Freaking. Course.

It was Maximus Avelrage. He was known around town and not for anything good. He took off his helmet and then proceeded to dismount his bike. He leaned against it like the little arrogant twat he was. I was about to walk away when I noticed a girl walk up to him hesitantly.

I knew someone new had moved in recently, but I could have sworn that she had been blonde. I studied the woman a little closer but was still stumped. It was only when she looked over her shoulder at the house did I realize who it was.

Lilian Stone aka my best friend's little sister. I called her little but there was nothing little about Lilian Stone anymore. Hadn’t she just been twelve like last year? Where had all the time gone?

When had she turned from the little girl with braids in her hair to this…this woman. I could only see the back of her but, from what I saw, I was impressed. Her legs were tanned and toned. Did she work out now? Her biker shorts shaped her butt perfectly.

“What the hell am I thinking?” I scolded my internal thoughts. That was my best friend's little sister. That was a no-go area.

I was about to walk away from the window when the guy she was talking to grabbed her. He started jostling her around, and she slapped him across the face.

It was time to step in.

I walked to my door and ripped it open. As I was descending the stairs the guy backhanded her, and she fell to the ground. He stood looming over her like he was going to hurt her again. Not on my watch.

“Hey!” I yelled, “get the hell away from her.”

I quickened my steps until I was in front of them. He glared at me like I was a little annoyance he wanted to get rid of. Not today buddy. I pushed him back to create some necessary distance between him and Lily who was still on the ground.

I positioned myself so that I was in front of her body, successfully blocking her from him.

“This doesn’t concern you. Nothing to see here.”

Was he in on drugs?

“I’m not going anywhere, you idiot.” I reached down and pulled Lily to her feet. “I think it’s time you leave, if you know what’s good for you.”

His jaw ticked, and his fists balled at his sides. He swung his arm back and let it fly. I pushed Lily back and ducked. I shot back up and connected my fist to the side of his face.

He stumbled back a few steps caressing his chin. He looked like he wanted to go for another round but then thought better of it.

“I will be seeing you around, Lils,” he hissed as he backed away to his bike.

“The hell you are. If I see you in this neighborhood again, Maximus, I will call Marcus, and he will deal with you personally.”

His glare deepened.

I continued to watch him until he climbed onto his bike and sped off down the road.

“Thank you.” Lily’s small voice said from behind me.

I turned around to scold her about her associating with a psychopath like Max, but then I stopped. She was bleeding.

Without thinking, I reached my hand out and brushed away her hair to reveal the small cut that was on the side of her head. When my fingers made contact with her skin, she gasped.

I retracted my hand. “Come on. I can help you get cleaned up.”

“That’s fine. You don’t have to do that.” She cast her eyes downward then looked back up at me. Had her eyes always looked like that? They were this blue-grey color that was a mix between an ocean and cloudy sky.

“I insist. I just need to make sure that you don’t need any stitches.”

“No. I don’t want to bother you with this.”
