I could understand the feeling. My mother had been the same when her death was nearing. Everything became Jade this or Jade that. It was like I went from being her number one to not even qualifying into the top five.

I shook off the negative thoughts. I didn’t need to be going down that rabbit hole again. It was in the past, and I needed to move forward.

“If you need a job you can come and work for me.”

What was I doing?

She blinked at me. “But I’m not a doctor.”

“Not as a doctor but as my receptionist. My old one recently moved out of town, and I’m in need of a new one. The pay is decent, and you have a few benefits. It can be a starting thing before you find something more permanent elsewhere.”

Her face split into a brilliant smile. She hopped off the counter and flung her arms around my neck. She squealed in excitement and fuck if my heart didn’t just do summersaults in my chest.

I was moving into dangerous waters that I didn’t need to be swimming in. My life was already complicated enough.

I cleared my throat.

Lily pulled back and stepped a few steps back creating the much-needed space between us. Her scent still lingered on me. I felt the stir in my pants, and I knew I was definitely in uncharted territories. This was Lily Stone for crying out loud. I can still remember her with a binkie in her mouth.

“Sorry about that.” She smiled shyly. “I promise I won’t let you down. So, when do I start?”

It took me a moment to find my voice again.

“You can start Monday. Be there by 7:45 sharp. I will show you how everything works before the full workday starts.”

“I can do that.” She started for the door before she turned around. “Thank you, Ethan. It really does mean a lot to me.”

I grunted in reply and turned to the first aid kit that I was yet to put away.

Lily didn’t say anything else before I heard her leave. I let out a breath I didn’t even know I had been holding.

I looked down at my pants and saw the bulge in my sweats.

Great. Not only had this been the shittiest of shitty days but now I had a hard-on and needed to get rid of.

I didn’t understand why I was reacting the way I was. Okay, that’s a lie, I knew why I was reacting this way. It was because of Lily, and that was the problem.

She was my best friend's baby sister. But she wasn’t a baby no more, that was for sure.

“Dammit Ethan,” I slammed the drawer after placing the first aid kit inside. I needed a shower. A very cold shower.
