Chapter 6 - Lily: First Day

To say I was nervous would have been an understatement. I was shitting bricks. Today was Monday and my first official day of work. I had very few professional outfits seeing as my last job only required me to wear crop tops and booty shorts.

I had arrived at Ethan’s practice thirty minutes earlier than he had told me to be there. I woke up at 5:00 AM; just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t late. Ethan was throwing me a bone, and I didn’t want to mess it up.

Ethan Masters. What were the odds that I would be working for him? Slim to none. I hadn’t seen nor heard from Ethan in almost two years.

When I had decided to move out of my house to go and live with Max, my mother was less than pleased. She made it known that, as long as I associated with Max, I was not welcome in her home.

That led to a lot of missed family holidays and birthday celebrations. Grayson had tried his best to bridge the gap between my mother and I but the tension between us ran too deep. The way I saw it, my mother was nothing more than an incubator that I was in for nine months before I was released into the world.

I stared at my coffee in my hands like it had killed my kitten. I hated when I started tapping into old feelings. It always soured my mood.

My mother wasn’t always like that. She changed when my father died. She was still functional, and she was a mother but only to her son. I was the daughter that she could barely look at. I knew there were parts of her that blamed me for dad’s accident, but she just never wanted to admit it.

I heard the sound of a loud engine coming into the parking lot. When I looked up, I saw Ethan roll in with a brand new truck. Grayson had told me that Ethan had sold his truck to him because he needed to pay off his mother’s medical bills.

Looking good enough to eat, Ethan hopped out of the truck. He wore black slacks and a white button-down that sculpted his arms perfectly. His hair was styled to look like he had rolled out of bed but in a sexy and panty-dropping way.

Lily, I scolded myself internally. Ethan was my boss. He wasn’t some man I could have a quickie with in the bathroom. Whatever little childhood crush I’d had on him was dead. We were both adults now.

“Good morning.” My voice sounded a little too cheery even in my ears.

Ethan gave me a look before he grunted in greeting. So he was not a morning person. Okay, that was good to know.

Ethan opened the door to his practice and I stepped inside. The first thing I noticed was that it was very modern and chic. For some reason I had not been expecting modern and chic to be Ethan’s vibe. He was always very broody and frat boy like. Then again, I was thinking of the teenage Ethan instead of the man who stood before me today.

The floors were made of white marble and the receptionist desk was made of dark wood that had been painted black. The waiting room chairs were black leather couches that looked inviting. There were large potted plants in every corner of the room. There were magazines on the large glass coffee table and there was even a refreshment center off to the side.

“Wow. You really went all out for this place. It’s really pretty.”

He cast a look over his shoulder. “Thanks. Come over here. I’ll show you how to work the software.”

I followed him to the computer on the desk. He pulled the chair out for me, and I sat down. I was doing my best to focus on everything he was saying but having him in such close proximity was messing with my head.

He leaned over the chair and his scent immediately assaulted my nose. His scent was different, at least from that last time I had been this close to him. He now smelled like sawdust and spice. It was an addictive scent.

“This is where you will find my daily schedules. These are all consultations, meetings, and other work activities that I may have. You will be responsible for calling patients to remind them about their appointments 24 hours in advance and then, on the day, you call them two hours before the appointment to remind them again.”

I nodded my head, but I was barely paying attention. My senses were in a frenzy.

“A few rules.” He moved away from me and rounded the desk, so he was in front of me. “You may be Grayson’s little sister, but I expect you to be professional. When you are at work, it is strictly all work. Do not bring your outside baggage here. If you do that, you are out. Second, Max does not come anywhere near my practice. Am I understood?”

“We broke up a while back. So, the likelihood of you seeing him here is slim to none.”

“Good.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “Third, don’t get involved in my private life. Don’t ask about my private life, and I will do the same to you. Lastly, you will get vacation days on all festive holidays but, if I have an emergency consult, then I may require you to come in. Are you good with that?”

I nodded.

“Great. Today is your first official day. Don’t screw it up.”

He walked to the back where his exam room and office were. When I heard his door shut, I let out a heavy breath. This was either going to be the best decision I had ever made, or it was going to be the worst decision I had ever made. Only time would tell.

By midday, Ethan had seen almost ten different patients, and he still had to see another six before the end of the day. You would think this would be a busy day for one man, but this was actually his easiest day according to his schedule.

I was about to head for lunch when I heard the door open. When I looked up, I came face to face with Jade. She had a polite smile etched on her face which made me want to smack her more. There was no way one person could be so nice all the time.

When she noticed me sitting at the reception, her steps faltered.
