“Lily? What are you doing here?”

“Uh working. What are you doing here? Isn’t it against HIPPA for doctors to attend to family members?”

“You work here now? Since when?”

“Since today.” It wasn’t me who answered her question. We both turned to see Ethan standing in the middle of the hallway with an annoyed expression on his face. “What do you want, Jade?”

His response was a little cold, which I wasn’t expecting. From what I remembered, Ethan and Jade were as thick as thieves growing up. They were attached at the hip. Where one went, the other followed.

“You could be a little nicer to me, Grayson. After all, I am working your case pro bono.”

“I didn’t ask you to do that, Jade. You jumped at the opportunity to do it yourself. If you want to drop the case, that’s fine. I can find another attorney.”

Jade pinched the bridge of her nose. “Look, I didn’t come here to fight. I just want to talk. Do you think we can do that? You know, have a civilized human conversation.”

“I have a patient coming in just now.”

“No, you don’t.” Why did I just decide to open my mouth? From the look on Ethan’s face, I was sure he wanted to murder me.

Jade clapped her hands. “Great. That means you are free. I only need a few minutes of your time, that’s all.”

Ethan ripped his harsh glare from me and turned to his sister. “You have ten minutes. If it is anything else that isn’t related to this case, then you can just go ahead and leave.”

“It’s about the case.”

“Good.” Ethan turned and started for his office. I knew that once he got done with his sister, he was going to come for my neck. I was dead. Very dead.

Jade thanked me and followed her brother to the back.

Why hadn’t I just kept my mouth shut? To be fair, it was like a knee-jerk reaction. I had been so interested in their back and forth that I got lost in it all. It could she. Also had something to do with the fact that Ethan made my brain turn to mush when he was around.

I grabbed my handbag, intending to go to lunch, but then I heard raised voices from down the hall.

“It’s none of my business. I should leave,” I tried to tell myself, but I still found myself tiptoeing toward Ethan’s door.

“Are we really going to do this now, Jade? I told you if it’s not case related, I don’t want to hear it.” Ethan sounded mad.

“Then when are we going to talk about anything, Ethan? It’s been months of me living here, and you are avoiding me like the plague.”

Well, well. Looks like there was trouble in the Masters’ household. It was nice to know that my family wasn’t the only one that had issues.
