“What is it, Lily?”

“Mr. Brandson came in for an emergency consult. He said that he is in pain.”

“Send him through.”

She nodded. “Okay. That’s fine.”

I waited for her to close the door, but she remained in her place, her eyes wondering around my office.

“Is there anything else that you needed, Lily?”

A pink hue tinted her cheeks. “No. Sorry, just admiring your office space it’s…ummm…very you.”

I quirked an eyebrow at her. The way she said it made the comment sound more like an insult than a compliment.

“Umm…I’m going to go now.” She quickly shut the door.

I let out a heavy breath and downed the rest of my water. I still had a busy day ahead of me so grabbing a drink was out of the question. I would endure the rest of my workday and go for a run. I was in need of blowing off some serious steam.

I walked to my cabinet and pulled out Mr. Brandson’s file. I took a quick scan of the notes I had made from his last scan and then headed out to the exam room.

It was well after six, and it was safe to say that I was ready for bed. After nine patients, excluding Mr. Brandson and two procedures, I was tired. Normally, I would have been more energized than anything else, but after dealing with my sister, I felt drained.

I hated being a dick to her but seeing her reminded me of everything that I wasn’t quite ready to face. It was unfair to her that I felt this way, but she had been one of the core reasons as to why I felt the way that I did.

I switched off the lights and walked out of my office. As I drew closer to the reception, I heard a familiar voice that I had not heard in a while.

“So he just hired you like that?” Grayson asked Lily.

When I came into view, both their necks snapped to me. Lily looked slightly annoyed while Grayson looked like he was on the verge of exploding.

“Grayson,” I greeted my best friend. It was weird between us now. It got weird sometime between him getting back with my sister and him finding out the truth about their baby.

“What the hell, Ethan?” His fury was evident.

“Not right now, Grayson. I have had a long day, and I don’t want to talk about my family issues with you right now.”

“Why are you being such a dick to her?” He walked up to me, “She has done nothing but try to be there for you since the moment she came back. For fucks sake. She moved back here to be closer to you.”

I scoffed, “My sister didn’t move here for me. She moved for you. You and I both know that. So stop trying to guilt trip me. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ve had a long day, and I want to head home.”

“No, we are talking about this right now.” He came up next to me, so we were eye level. “I’m tired of seeing Jade cry because you refuse to act the part of her brother and be there for her. She is still hurting too. You aren’t the only one that lost somebody.”

He had to be kidding, right? There was no way that he actually meant those words.

“I’m not doing this with you.” I tried to step around him, but he blocked my path. “Grayson, move. I won’t ask you again.”

“What happened to you, man? It’s like overnight, you turned into this asshole that seems to be angry at the world.” His eyes searched mine like they were looking for some magical answer. “I know you lost your mom, and it hurts but…”

“Grayson,” I warned. This was not the conversation I wanted to have.

“Why are you so angry, Ethan? We want to help you. We care about you.”

“Gray, he said he doesn’t want to talk.” It was only then that I was reminded of Lily’s presence. “Let him leave. He’s had a long day.”

“Lily, don’t get involved in issues you know nothing about.”

“And you do, Grayson,” I spat. “You don’t know what is going on within my family. You are on the outside looking in. So drop whatever you are trying to do here and leave me alone. What happens between Jade and I will remain between Jade and I.”
