Chapter 10 - Lily: Three Shots

The food at Bishop’s was good, and my stomach was full. I was ready to start my mission. Operation Help Lift Ethan’s Mood was a go.

“See, I knew you would like it.” I said to him, as we walked out of the diner. “Sometimes, you just need to live and let go. You don’t always have to be so serious and proper all the time.”

I rolled my eyes. “I know how to let loose.”

Lily stopped dead in her tracks. She quirked an eyebrow at me in challenge.

“Oh really? So, what do you do to let loose.”

“I read.”

“What do you read?”

“Medical journals,” he said with confidence and a straight face.

I stared at him for a moment before I burst out laughing. It wasn’t one of those soft giggles but a big boisterous laugh that had me snorting at the end.

“Are you serious?”

“What is wrong with reading medical journals. I am a doctor, after all.”

I wiped away a tear from my eyes and sobered. “I know you are a doctor but reading medical journals for fun? That’s not fun, Ethan. I’m talking about what you do to let loose. What do you do to blow off some steam?”

“I work out.”

I rolled my eyes. “Come on. We are going to help you let loose a little. You re wound too tight, and you are too young to be this boring.”

I started walking down the pavement toward the bar I had looked up before we came here. Ethan followed behind me begrudgingly.

I swiveled on my feet, so I was now facing him and walking backward. “Ethan Masters, when was the last time you had genuine fun?”

“You are going to trip over yourself. Turn around.” He placed his hands in his pocket, staring at me. “Lily, turn around.”

“I’m fine. I have done more in taller heels than walk backwards. Now, tell me, Ethan, when was the last time you had genuine fun?”

“Turn around, Lily.”

“Will you stop being such a—” I tripped over something which cause me to fall backward. My head almost hit the concrete, but Ethan spring into action. His arm snaked around my waist, and he pulled me back up until I was flush against his chest.

“I told you.” I could feel his hot breath against my ear. A shiver ran down my spine at the sound of his voice. My breathing came out heavy and labored my senses going off in a frenzy.

“Sorry,” I breathed. I looked up at him. Being this close to him, I could see the different colors that made up his iris. How had I never noticed that speck of yellow swimming in his eyes before?

Time stood still. The world around us faded away. All I could see and feel was Ethan Masters. His scent bombarded my senses. I didn’t know which was up and which was down. Someone could have asked me what my name was in that moment, and I would have blanked.

His eyes pierced into mine like a spear. There was something behind them, but I couldn’t tell what it was for sure. Hunger? Longing? Lust? Whatever it was, it caused his eyes to darken.

I tried to swallow the lump that had lodged itself in the middle of my throat.

Our faces were mere inches from one another. Our hot breaths mingled together, neither of us breaking the stare. I began to wonder what it would feel like to have Ethan’s lips against mine. I wondered if he would taste just as good as he smelled.

I don’t know who moved first but, before I knew it, the distance between us was lessening. My eyes fluttered closed anticipating his lips landing upon mine.

His breath fanned my face. As he inched closer, I could smell the strawberry blast he had just had from the diner.

Then he pulled away, creating a distance between us. The fog around my mind began to clear, the sense returning to my mind.
