I was about to kiss Ethan. No, I was about to kiss my brother’s best friend/boss/neighbor. My life was already complicated enough. No matter how much I wanted to, I knew that whatever was about to happen should never happen.

I looked to Ethan, and he was running a hand through his now messy hair. It wasn’t messy in a way one would think it looked bad. It was giving him that I-just-rolled-out-of-bed look. I liked it.

No, no. You don’t like it, Lily. You shouldn’t like any part of this man. My internal voice was doing her best to be the voice of reason, but my body didn’t want logic or reason. It just wanted Ethan. No, it craved Ethan.

What was just thinking? Was I going mentally insane? This wasn’t Ethan my childhood crush. This was Ethan, my boss. The man who signed my pay check and definitely not the man I should be imagining doing stuff to.

I cleared my throat, trying to shake off the awkwardness of the situation. “The bar is just at the end of the block. Come on.”

I didn’t wait for him. I just started walking. Eventually, he caught up to me. I wanted to say something, anything that was going to take us away from the awkwardness of that almost-kiss.

My brain struggled to think of a topic.

“So, your plan of fun is trying to get me drunk?” I could hear the teasing in his voice, and I knew that whatever had just happened was already passed.

“Not drunk, Masters, just a little tipsy, so you let loose and have a little fun. Tonight we throw caution to the wind and let what may come, come.”

“This sounds like a disaster just waiting to happen, Stone.”

I don’t know why but hearing him say my name like that sent shivers down my spine. I wanted to hear him say my name like that a thousand times.

“In life, youth have to learn to embrace the chaos every once in a while. Otherwise, there is no point of living if you just stick between the boundaries.”

“I’m probably going to regret this,” he grumbled under his breath but still continued to follow me.

When we got to the entrance of the bar, I already knew that I had made the right choice when I saw the sign. I squealed in excitement.

“What?” Ethan looked where I was staring. “Hell no. You couldn’t pay me enough.”

“Don’t be such a spoil sport.” I grabbed his hand and pulled him into the Mojo’s Bar. Tonight was karaoke night, and I was going to get Ethan Masters to sign with me.

I didn’t let his hand go until we were at the bar and waiting to order.

I looked up at him and saw him scowling at everything.

“You are going to scare people away if you keep glaring at everything and everyone.”

“This place hardly seems sanitary.”

“You sound stuck up, you know that? Why don’t you go and find us a table, and I will bring the drinks to you.”

Ethan nodded and took something out of his pocket. I looked down at his hand and saw his credit card.

“No,” I said firmly. “I’m paying. This whole adventure-thing was my idea so it’s my treat. You are simply a passenger on this crazy little adventure we’re having here.”

Ethan shrugged and walked away from the bar.

“What can I get for you?” The bartender asked.

“Please may I have two long islands and six shots of your finest tequila?”

The bartender smirked. “Drinking to forget or not feel?”

“To pretend.”

I could see the questions written on his face, but he didn’t say anything further. He got started on my order, and I turned my attention back to the rest of the bar.

There was a middle-aged man singing all the keys of Whitney Houston’sI Will Always Love Youwrong, but he didn’t seem to care. He was up there having the time of his life. I envied him a little. I wanted to be that free and filled with joy.
