It was strange how the simple things like peace and joy were now so expensive to obtain in the world today.

No, bad Lily, I scolded myself. This was not the time to get all sappy and weepy. Now was the time for drinking, laughing, and to hoping I could live through the night with Ethan.

“Here you go, two long islands.” I turned to face the bartender. “I’ll bring your shots to your table.”

I nodded and handed him my card, but he shook his head.

“It’s on me. A pretty lady like you should never have to pay for anything.” He winked at me and left to go and prepare another order.

Who was I to look a gift horse in the mouth? If he wanted to pay for me then by all means he could go right ahead.

I spotted Ethan easily since he towered over almost everyone in the bar. Leave it to him to pick the table that was all the way off to the corner.

I maneuvered my way through the crowd and finally made it to the table. When I set the drink down in front of him, he looked like he was ready to dump it on the floor.

“What’s this?” He pointed to the drink like it was some chemical hazard. To be fair, there was a lot going on in that one glass.

“That would be a Long Island.” I hopped onto the bar stool. I took my first sip of the drink. “Woo, I forgot how these tasted.”

“What’s in it?”

“Umm…tequila, rum, vodka, lemon juice, coke and a dash of gin.”

His eyes widened slightly. “Are you trying to kill my liver?”

“I’m trying to help you let loose. Remember? We are different people here. Just let your inhibitions run wild and free. Come on. Cheers, Ethan.”

I raised my glass and waited for him to clink his against mine. With much reluctancy, he clinked his glass to mine and took his first sip.

Surprisingly, he took it like a champ. I stared at him from above the rim of my glass. His brown locks fell over his forehead. His lips curved around the rim of the glass taking slow sips of the poison I had picked for us tonight.

My eyes then wondered down to his chest. The white button down he wore still managed to sculpt his torso perfectly. I wondered what laid behind the fabric. I wanted nothing more than to rip it open and see.

“Here you go.” The bartender set down the shots on a tray.

I snapped out of my little daydream and looked to him with a thankful smile. I turned my attention back to Ethan who was currently glaring at the bartender.

A hand came to rest on the small of my back which caused me to stiffen. I turned to the bartender, moving away from him slightly so he would remove his hand, but the message didn’t get across.

“I never got your name earlier. I’m Eli, and you are?”

“My wife.” My head snapped to Ethan, but he was already looking at Eli with a heat in his eyes I had never seen before.

Well, this was going to be interesting.
