Chapter 12 - Ethan: Drink Up

I was talking out of my ass. It was the concoction I was currently holding in my hand. That was the only logical explanation as to why I would say those words to her.

Her eyes were wide with shock. I think I surprised us both.

I cleared my throat. “What I meant to say was…”

I didn’t know where I was going with this. Why did I suddenly feel so nervous? I had no reason to be nervous. This was Lily we were talking about her. Sweet Lily Stone who liked to play with babies in the treehouse that used to be in their backyard.

My eyes looked down at the tray filled with shots on it.

“Let’s play a game.” I needed to divert this conversation elsewhere.

Lily snapped out of whatever reverie she had been under and focused on me.

“What game?”

“Truth or drink. You ask a question, and I can either choose to tell the truth or, if I don’t want to answer, then I will take a shot.”

“So, I can ask any question I want?”

“No. You can’t ask about my family.”

“Okay, that’s fair.” She looked at the shot glasses on the tray before turning back to me. “Who starts?”

“Ladies first. Hit me.”

Lily tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. The urge to brush away the stray strands from her face hit me.

“Did you always want to do family medicine?”

Okay, she was starting us off easy. I could answer this.

“No. Originally, I wanted to go into psychiatry, but then I changed my mind at the last minute.”

“Why?”

I wagged my finger in front of her. “That’s two questions. It’s my turn now.”

I took another swig of the Long Island.

“If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?”

She thought over my question for a moment. Her forehead scrunched as her mind ticked. I had found that this was something she did often when she was in deep concentration or frustrated.

She was so animated. She wore all her emotions on her face, but there were times when she would just go dead in the eyes. It would only happen for a few seconds, but it was enough for me to notice.

“I would want to go to New York. I’ve lived in Riverroad my entire life. I want to see what big city living would be like. Is it as horrible as people make it out to be? Or is it as freeing as others say.”

“So, what’s stopping you?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. It’s probably not the right time.”

I nodded.

“My turn.” She sipped on her drink. “Have you ever been in love, Ethan?”

Not what I was expecting.
