“Enjoy your stay.” The elderly woman smiled at me.

“Thank you,” Lily replied with a smile of her own.

Once we were in the elevator, an awkward silence overcame us. I braved a look her way. Her jaw was locked tight, and her eyes were staring at the elevator doors like they had wronged her.

When the doors pulled open on the second floor, Lily stepped out first.

“Here is your key. You are room 208 and I am 209.” She started walking down the hallway with an urgency.

“Lily, wait.” I jogged up to her, but she didn’t stop

“Goodnight, Ethan.”

I grabbed her arm, pulling her to a stop.

Her blue eyes snapped to mine. The look she gave me caused a heavy weight to come over my chest.

“Lily…” I started.

“Don’t.” She ripped her arm from my grasp. “Goodnight, Ethan.”

“Lily, wait.”

“Wait for what, Ethan? Your apology? ‘Hey, Lily, I’m sorry for sending you all the wrong signals and making you think I wanted you’? No, thank you. I’ve been embarrassed enough for one day.”

“I wasn’t going to say that.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “Then what were you going to say?”

I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out.

“You see?” She threw her hands up in the air in exasperation. “Ethan, I know you want me. I can see it in your eyes. You want me the same way that I want you.”

Thud. My heart hammered in my chest.

“We are miles away from Riverroad, Ethan. We can do whatever the hell we want, be whoever the hell we want to be. Why don’t you just take what you want with both hands?”

“I…I…can’t, Lily. You and I both know this.”

“Says who, Ethan? I’m a woman, and you are a man. We both have the hots for each other. Whatever happens in Amberbay, stays here. Nothing will be carried over to Riverroad. The road begins and ends here.”

She stepped right up to me.

“Now tell me, Ethan. Are you willing to take what you want with both hands?”

I stared down at her, fighting every muscle in my body not to close the distance between us. The thing I wanted was the thing that I could not have. She wasn’t making it any easier for me to say no.

She wanted an answer, but I couldn’t give her the answer she wanted. When she realized this, she stepped away.

“Goodnight, Ethan.” She walked to her door and entered into it without looking back at me.

“Fuck,” I hissed.
