Lily swallowed hard. Her pupils dilated slightly, as she stared at me.

“The one thing I want is the one thing I can’t have.” Her eyes bored into mine, showing me exactly what she meant by that.

I should have ended the game right there and then. I should have excused myself from the table. I should have moved away, but I didn’t.

There had been this push and pull between Lily and I since day one. I felt it, and I did my best to ignore it. Maybe it was the liquor driving me or maybe it was my sudden lack of sense, but I found myself leaning in her direction.

Her vanilla scent bombarded my senses.

“What is it that you want?”

Now was the time for me to pull back. Now was the time for me to remind her and myself of those boundaries. The lines I had established were blurring, and I was losing sight of where to step and where not to.

“You know what I want, Ethan. The question is, do you?” She bit down on her lip, but this time, I acted on my urge.

I cupped the side of her face and used my thumb to pull her bottom lip from between her teeth. I rubbed my thumb against the soft skin of her lips which caused her to gasp.

“I do.” My voice was soft, softer than I had ever heard it. “I do know what I want, but I also know I can’t have it.”

She leaned into my touch. “Yes, you can. You can have whatever you want here, Ethan. All you need to do is take it.”

I wanted to. I really fucking wanted to. But I couldn’t.

Like a bucket had just washed over me, I pulled back and stood abruptly from my chair. Lily seemed to come through from the haze she had been under.

“I’m sorry.” I bolted and headed straight for the door.

What the hell had I been thinking? I had blurred the lines. I was about to step over lines that could never be uncrossed again.

When I rushed out the door, I was met with heavy rain. Crap. The wind blew, carrying the rain in all different directions. It was a fall storm.

When I turned to head back inside, I stopped.

Lily held out her arm. “You left your phone.”

Her eyes were dead again. I couldn’t get a solid read on her. I didn’t know how she felt or what she was even feeling in that moment.

“Thanks.” I took it from her. “Umm…I don’t think we will be able to drive home in this storm, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to let up any time soon, either.”

“There is an inn nearby. We can stay there for the night.”

“What about the car?”

“We will get it in the morning. It’s closer to walk to the inn than it is to the car.” She took off her heels and held them in her hand. “Come on. If we run, it will be faster.”

She didn’t wait for me to reply. She jogged down the sidewalk to the inn that I hadn’t noticed when we had first gotten to the bar.

When we entered the building, we were greeted by an elderly looking woman at the reception. There were cream carpeted floors and hardwood furniture all around us.

Lily walked up to the front desk and started talking to the woman. She still was yet to look me in the eyes. I didn’t even know what I was supposed to say.

Hey, sorry I almost kissed you and then bolted like a preteen?

I couldn’t say that. My best answer to any of this was silence.

Lily looked over her shoulder at me for a moment before she turned back to the woman. They both laughed and then the woman handed Lily two room keys.

She gestured for me to follow her toward the elevator.
