“He’s not here. He went out for a run a while back.” His eyes then moved past us to look at whatever was behind us. “Well, you are in luck. Looks like he’s back from his run.”

Maddison looked over her shoulder, but I didn’t dare. I stayed looking ahead, wanting more than anything to just be swallowed whole. I didn’t know how to talk to him. What was I going to say? I had been tip toeing around him since the time which shall not be named even though it was probably the best sex I had ever had in my life.

“Lily?” His voice still sent butterflies in my stomach.

I turned slowly to face him. I waved my hand at him lamely. “Hi.”

Even my own voice sounded weird. This was a bad idea coming here. I was only going to make a fool of myself or worse.

“Ethan, she cut herself with a knife, and I don’t have any dressing or bandages in my house. So I was hoping you could help her.”

Ethan’s hand went to my hand which was still clutching the wet towel firmly. He came right up to me and took my hand gently in his. His touch sent warm tingles throughout my body. He removed the towel and assessed my injury.

His eyes flicked up to mine momentarily before he went back to assessing my cut.

“It’s not going to require stitches, but I do need to clean it out. Follow me.”

I was about to protest and say no, but Maddison was already walking into the house. She exchanged a nasty look with Marcus before she moved forward.

Ethan stopped by the stairs and looked over his shoulder at me. “Lily, come with me. Maddison, you can wait in the living room with Marcus.”

“Come on, princess.” Marcus winked at Maddison, who just continued to glare at him like her vision could vaporize him where he stood.

“Call me princess one more time, and I will castrate you.”

“Kinky. I’m kind of into it.”

They continued their back and forth bickering until they were out of sight. Ethan started up the stairs, and I followed behind him. It was easy enough to avoid him at work. We stayed in separate rooms.

When we got to the bathroom, he sat me down on the toilet seat and pulled out his first aid box. He handled my hand with gentleness and care. It reminded me of how gentle he had been with me that night.

No. That was a thing of the past, and I could not go back. Choices had been made, and we were reaping the consequences.

He dabbed the iodine onto my hand, causing me to hiss in pain.

“Sorry.” His eyes were so soft, it pained me.

“It’s fine,” I mumbled under my breath.

“How did you cut your hand?” He started bandaging my hand.

“I grabbed the knife the wrong way.”

His movements stilled.

“How did you grab a knife the wrong way?”

“I got distracted. I wasn’t thinking clearly.”

You. I wanted to scream in his face. It was you who had been distracting me you idiot. But I kept those internal feelings inside. The words would do nothing more than cause more awkwardness between us.

“You’ve been distracted a lot lately at work, too. You keep mixing up the patient’s files.”

I didn’t respond. It was true I had been making dumb mistakes. It was hard to focus and to concentrate with him being so close. I had been a fool that night to think that I would have been able to cope after doing what we had done.

“There.” He taped down the bandage. “Leave the bandage on for the next 48 hours but after that, you can remove it.”

I nodded and got up. I stepped around him to leave the bathroom, but he held me by the arm to keep me in place.
