I let out a teary laugh, “he’s not a surgeon.”

“Okay then plan b is we go and trash his practice and spray paint it. We could draw giant dicks all over the place, because he is such a dick. Plus, I think it would be therapeutic for you.”

“That’s a felony Mads.”

She shrugged, “we could get a gut to do it. Money is no object after all.”

I knew she was only trying to make me laugh but my heart just felt heavy. All I wanted was Ethan. All I wanted was for him to not fight what was going on between us.

Maddie pulled away a little so she could see my face, “it’s going to be okay Lily. Heartbreak sucks but it’s not the end of the world even if it feels like it.”

I nodded but I didn’t fully believe that. I didn’t know heartbreak could physically make your chest hurt. All I could feel was agony and despair. I didn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel. I didn’t see a hope.

I wondered, after my heart was done breaking and all that remained was carnage, would there be anything left of it to put back together.

Who knew love could be so destructive. I mean, Shakespeare did, seeing as he wrote Romeo and Juliet. What a tragedy that was.

Maybe that’s what Ethan and I were. Two star crossed lovers that just weren’t meant to be. However, in our story only one of us acknowledged the connection we shared while the other ran from it.
