Making up my mind, I crashed my lips against hers and gave her exactly what she was asking for. I should have pulled back and walked away. I should have kept to the boundaries, but when it came to Lily, I always found myself to be a weak man.

When we were both naked and sweaty, our bodies lay beside one another. I stared up at the ceiling, internally scolding myself for having plunged myself deeper into my hole. I needed to leave.

I sat up on the bed, ready to make my exit, but then Lily reached out for my hand.

“I know you want to leave but please stay.” Her voice was so meek and broken. “I just need you to stay please…just for tonight. I just need you to hold me until the pain stops.”

Her brown hair was unruly, and her eyes held a lot of vulnerability in them. I knew it was taking a lot out of her to even ask this of me.

I nodded and returned to my place beside her. I opened my arms to her, and she rested her head on my chest. I moved my hand up and down her body in a soothing motion. After a few short minutes, her breathing evened out, and she fell into a deep sleep on top of me. I followed shortly after.

When the morning came, the first rays of sunshine woke me up. It took me a moment to realize where I was. When the events of last night hit me, I was hit with an instant wave of shame.

What had I done?

I heard my phone buzz on the nightstand. I picked it up and looked at the screen.

15 missed calls

2 messages from Grayson.

5 messages from Marcus

I wanted to talk to neither. I knew what Marcus was going to say, and I wasn’t in the mood for a lecture so early in the morning. I would face the music later.

I looked down at a sleeping Lily. She looked so innocent as she slept beside me. You would never guess that she has a mountain of problems going on in her head.

Slowly, I removed myself from beneath her, being careful not to wake her. Once I was free, I gathered my clothes and made my way out of her room.

I had screwed up. I had told myself that I wasn’t going to get close to Lillian Stone, yet here I was doing the walk of shame from her room.

I made my way downstairs but stopped short when I heard a noise coming from the kitchen. I stilled. It was most likely Maddison.

There was no way I was going to be able to leave through the front without her noticing me. It was best just to walk straight into it, rather than try to avoid it.

I turned the corner to the kitchen and found Maddison sitting on the island in an oversized hoodie and a coffee mug in her hand.

“You know, it’s common courtesy to notify someone when you have found the person you were looking for.”

“Sorry about that.”

Her ice-blue eyes narrowed at me. “You spent the night.”

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“You two had sex.”

It wasn’t a question, either, but I still nodded.

“She loves you, you know?”

My heart hammered in my chest.

“I think love is a strong word.”

Maddison shook her head after taking a sip of her coffee. “It’s actually not strong enough to describe what that girl feels for you. And judging from your reaction, I know that you are in fact not in love with her.”
