“But I do think you need to talk to your brother. He feels terrible about everything that happened last night. Grayson can be impulsive and brash sometimes, but he means well. What you said to him last night really hit home for him. I’m not saying you need to talk to him right away, but you will need to talk to him eventually.

“You can’t cut him off forever. He loves you, and I know you love him. A lot of heated words were exchanged, and the wounds would need to heal from them. But take it from someone who is in the middle of being iced out by their sibling, it’s a horrible place to be.”

I placed my other hand on top of hers. “Ethan does love you. I think he just has his own demons that he is fighting.”

She nodded. “I know. I just miss my best friend.”

“He misses you, too. He’s just a hard head who can’t get in touch with his feelings,” I joked. I was talking about her and Ethan, but the statement also applied to Ethan and me. I knew he felt something for me, but he just wouldn’t allow himself to admit it.

Jade and I talked a little more and surprisingly, the talk was exactly what I needed. I left the bistro with the weight having lifted slightly and my head feeling a little clearer. I knew I would need to face my family eventually, but for now, I needed to get my head on straight.

I was walking to the car when I heard someone call my name from behind. I turned and tensed.

“Surprised to see me, baby?” Max kicked off the wall he had been leaning on and stalked toward me.

“What do you want, Max?” I slowly began backing away as he drew closer to where I stood.

“Funny thing. A buddy of mine down in Amberbay told me that he saw you with Masters down at the bar.” He pointed his finger at me. “Now that got me thinking. What would my Lily be doing at some dingy bar two towns over?”

“I’m not your Lily, Max. I haven’t been yours for a while.”

“Oh, that’s where you are wrong, Lillian. I own you. You’ve had your little single time. Now it’s time to stop playing games and come back.”

“Screw you, Max,” I turned to make a quick run for it, but he grabbed my shoulder. Max lifted me by my arms and slammed me hard against the concrete wall.

“Did you let Masters fuck you?” he sneered close to my face. “Tell me, does he give it to you as good as I used to give it to you?”

“Let me go.” I kicked my legs, trying to land a good hit, but he kept moving.

Max drew his arm back and then surged it forward getting me in the stomach. The air left my lungs, and I keeled over in pain. Max dropped me to the ground. Luckily, I caught myself before my head could hit the ground.

I tried to stand, but before I could fully get up, Max punched the side of my head. My vision instantly blurred, the hit disorientating me. I fell to the ground, my body suddenly feeling weak.

“Hey!” I heard a distant voice say, but my vision was fading in and out.

“Lily! Oh my gosh Lily!” Was that Jade?

I tried to keep my eyes open, but everything felt so heavy. I felt tired, and my head was pounding.

The last thing I remember was seeing Jade’s blurry face before everything went dark.
