Chapter 21 - Ethan: Surprise

I had just finished going over some patient’s files when I heard knocking coming from my door. I got up from my chair in the kitchen and made my way to the door.

I opened it and came face to face with Grayson.

“Hey.”

“I come in peace.” He lifted his hand that was carrying a beer. “Can we talk?”

I opened the door wider so he could walk through. We made our way to the back porch. When we were settled in our chairs, he handed me a beer. For a moment we didn’t speak, we just sat awkwardly, neither of us wanting to speak first.

Grayson looked around my porch. “It feels like I haven’t been here in years.”

I hummed in agreement, “Yeah, you don’t come over anymore.”

“You don’t invite me over anymore. And whenever I invite you over for game night, you make excuses.”

I quirked an eyebrow his way. I brought the beer to my lips and took a swig. I had my reasons. I needed my space from my sister, and he was constantly around her. It wasn’t his fault, but it also was his fault at the same time.

I cleared my throat. “Have you spoken to Lily yet?”

He shook his head. I could see the pain welling in his eyes. He knew he was in the wrong. What he had done had crossed so many lines.

“Have you spoken to her?”

“Not really.” I sighed. If by talking to her, do you mean did I sleep with her and then leave before she woke up then yes, yes I have.

He let out a heavy sigh. “I fucked up, man. What I said to her last night…”

“Yeah, you did.”

He looked at me for a moment and then let out a low chuckle.

“I hadn’t known she was carrying all that weight on her shoulders. I feel like an idiot for not having seen it sooner. All these years, I just thought she was acting out, but lo and behold, she was just wanting me to pay a little more attention to her. What kind of big brother am I that I couldn’t even protect my own little sister?”

Join the club. I had felt the same way when Jade had busted on me about everything our mother had put us through. There were times I had been so absorbed in my own life, trying to make sure that I was preparing a better future for her, that I forgot that she still needed me in the present.

“I don’t even know where I will fucking begin. She wants nothing to do with me right now, and to be honest, after what I said, I wouldn’t want anything to do with me right now.”

“How about starting with I’m sorry.”

Grayson’s lips tilted slightly into a small smile. “Smart ass.”

“It’s my specialty.” I tilted my beer in his direction. “But just start by talking to her. Lily is understanding. She has the kind of heart that doesn’t hold onto hate. Besides, she loves you. She’s just hurt right now, but once that hurt subsides, she will talk to you. She has that kind of heart that just keeps on loving; it’s in her nature.”

He nodded in agreement.

Grayson took a big swig of his beer before leaning forward in the chair and resting his elbows on his knees. A serious look painted his features. His hands fiddled with the bottle, as he tried to formulate his next words.

“I’m just going to come out and ask because there is no point beating around the bush.” He turned to look at me dead in the eyes. “Are you fucking my sister?”

If I had been drinking something, I was sure I would have choked on it. I tried to keep as composed as possible without overreacting. I had two options here. I could either lie and tell him he was crazy. Or I could tell him the truth and face whatever consequences were to come my way.

“We aren’t sleeping together anymore.”

You could have cut the tension between us with a knife. It was so thick.

“When did you start having sex with my little sister?” he bit out.
