I walked over to the bed and held her hand in mine. She felt colder than normal. I brought her delicate hand to my lips and kissed it softly.

I looked down at her sleeping from. I wished more than anything she would open her eyes. But then I wondered if she did open her eyes in this moment, would they be filled with joy or would they be filled with that pain I had seen so often in them?

I had been a cause of the majority of that pain.

I leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.

“I am sorry,” I muttered against her skin. “I am so sorry.”

I was apologizing for all the confusion and pain I had caused. I was apologizing for denying us the chance to be together earlier. I was apologizing for not being there when this horrible thing had happened.

I was apologizing for not having seen her all this time.

I rose to my full height, ready to make myself comfortable and wait for her to wake. I didn’t care what anyone said. I would not leave her side. I had left her for too long, and I wasn’t going to do it anymore.

When I stood, I watched her eyes flutter open. I stilled for a moment, waiting to see what I would see in those beautiful blue oceans that I loved so dearly.

“Hey.” Her voice was soft, barely above a whisper.

There was no pain. There was no anger. All I saw when I looked into her eyes was her. I saw my Lily. I saw her light, and most importantly, I saw her love.

“Hey baby,” I had to fight against the lump that had formed in my throat.
