“She’s fine. A little banged up, but she is awake. The doctor is just doing a few checkups, and then we can go back in.”

“Is she with anybody? Maybe I should go in there and make sure that the doctor is being thorough.”

I tried to sidestep Marcus so I could head to Lily’s room, but he blocked my path.

“Marcus, move.”

“Slow your role. She is with Maddison, and Maddie made it abundantly clear that neither you or Grayson are permitted in the room.”

“Why the fuck not?”

“What?”

Both Grayson and I said at the same time.

“Something about Lily not wanting to see you because you called her unlovable last night.” Marcus then turned to me. “And as for you, I think that is quite self-explanatory.”

“This is bullshit, and you know it, Marcus. Move. I’m going to see Lily.”

Marcus blocked my path again.

“Okay, tell you what. I will go in and let Maddie know that you guys are here. This way, I can disarm the bulldog, and Lily can mentally prepare for you.”

I was about to disagree, but Jade placed her hand on my shoulder.

“Go, Marcus.”

Marcus took off toward the room leaving Grayson, Jade, and I alone.

Jade came to stand in front of me. “Look I know you want to see her, but you need to be calm. You can’t go in like this. You need to calm down. I know we aren’t seeing eye-to-eye right now but trust me on this.”

Without thinking, I enveloped her in a hug. Jade was stunned for a few seconds but eventually she returned my embrace.

“This is nice,” she mumbled into my chest.

I let out a soft chuckle. It felt so good to be able to hold my sister and not feel this heavy weight on my chest.

I pulled away and looked down at her. “I have treated you unfairly, and for that, I am truly sorry, Jade. You took a lot of the weight of things I had to sort through personally. I am sorry for any pain I have caused you during this time, and I really hope that we can rebuild what I broke.”

Jade smiled a teary smile and pulled me in for another hug.

“Of course we can.”

“I love you,” I mumbled into her hair. “I love you so much, baby sister.”

“And I love you,” she muttered into my chest.

“As much as I hate to break up this touching moment, it seems Marcus has disarmed the bulldog, and you can make your way into the room.”

I looked up, and sure enough, Marcus and Maddison were walking down the hallway away from Lily’s room. Well, Maddison seemed more like she was storming away from Marcus.

I detached from my sister and handed her to Grayson. I took off down the hallway without second thought and made my way to Lily’s room.

I stood at the door for a moment bracing myself for whatever I was about to walk into. I knocked on the door and waited. There was no answer.

I gently opened the door and made my way into the room.

Lily was sleeping on the bed. Her face had lost a little bit of color, and her hair looked disheveled, but other than that, she looked fine. I couldn’t see her chart anywhere, and I knew that they probably had taken it to update it.
