Chapter 4 - Lily: To My Rescue

I had collected my things from my brother's house and was currently sitting in Maddison’s sleek Range Rover. I didn’t know what this girl did for work but, from what I had seen, this girl had money.

“So you’re rich, then?” I filled the silence, as we drove toward her house.

She side-eyed me. “My family has money.”

“That still makes you rich. What do you do for a living?”

“Business.”

“What kind of business.”

“Now, that is none of your business.” She came to a stop at a red light. “Look, I just want you to look after the house. You and I don’t have to be best friends, okay? I would actually prefer it if we didn’t get into each other’s personal lives.”

“Okay,” I drawled. I didn’t need her as a friend anyway. I was just trying to be polite.

When she turned the corner, I realized we turned into a very familiar neighborhood. A neighborhood I hadn’t been in for years. The last time I had been here, I had left crying like a five-year-old.

Maybe it was a coincidence. What was the likelihood that the house I was moving into was near his house? There was just no way. Right?

She drove a little further until she pulled into the driveway that was next door to none other than Ethan Masters. I was now convinced that the heavens hated me.

“This is your house?” I asked stupidly. Of course this was her house. She was getting out of the car after all.

Maddison looked at me. “Yeah. I know it’s a little small but it’s charming, I guess.”

She didn’t even sound like she liked the house but, judging from her Paris Hilton aesthetic, she was probably used to sky-rise buildings on the penthouse floor.

We exited out of the car and took my luggage out of the back. I wheeled my suitcase up the driveway to the porch. The house was beautiful. It was in one of the nicer parts of Riverroad.

The outside was painted a neutral beige, and there were a different array of colored flower that lined the bottom of the porch.

We walked into the house and my mouth dropped. She had downplayed this house. The floors were made of dark hardwood. There was the kitchen to the left and a living room off to the right. From what I could see, she had decorated the house in a country-style contemporary vibe. I loved it.

“Your room is upstairs and the second door to your left. You can make yourself at home. I need to rush to the airport, so I don’t miss my flight. If you need anything you can just text me. Okay?”

I nodded, still so transfixed on how beautiful the house was.

“Don’t forget that rent will be due in two weeks. You can just Venmo me the cash. Sound good?”

My back stiffened. Rent. I hated that word. It meant I had to spend money that I knew that I did not have.

“Yeah, sounds great.”

Maddison flipped her blonde hair over her shoulder. She looked down at her phone and became completely oblivious to my presence.

“Maddison?” I tried to gain her attention but she continued to type away like I wasn’t even there.

She typed a for a few moments and then looked up from her screen. “What? I really do need to rush but there is food in the fridge but not a lot so you will need to fill it up. I will be back maybe within the next two weeks I have a few things I need to sort out, in New York. Washer and dryer are in the bathroom and just in case you are one is those kleptomaniacs I have surveillance in the house. So don’t try anything.”

I immediately started looking around for the cameras but I didn’t see any.

“Don’t bother, they are hidden,” she flipped her hair over her shoulder, “I need to rush now. Don’t forget to send me your information.”

Before I could even say anything to her, she was out the door.

“Safe flight,” I said to no one.
