I heard her rev up her engine and then she pulled out of the driveway.

I looked around the entrance. This was where I was calling home for the unforeseeable future. But if I wanted to keep living, I needed to come up with a plan for rent, and with the luck I had in town, I was not going to find a job in Riverroad any time soon.

I was running out of options and time. If I didn’t come up with a plan then I was going to be forced to move back with my mother and that was the last thing I wanted.

She had texted me before I had packed up my things and left Grayson’s house saying that I was being reckless by moving in with someone I didn’t even know. I had to admit she was right about moving in with a complete stranger being slightly dangerous. But I wanted my independence. My mother and I just didn’t see eye to eye. This arrangement was better for the both of us.

My brother and mother shared everything which was so annoyingly frustrating. There were no secrets between them. It sucked because I couldn’t turn to either of them without one of them spilling the secrets to the other.

I had one option when it came to a possible job but it meant contacting someone I didn’t want to. I hadn’t spoken to Max in months, and we had left things sour when I left but he was my only hope.

I groaned, already knowing what the conversation with him might go like. If I had to contact him, then I would at least prolong it. First on the agenda was showering.

When I had found my room, I unpacked my clothes and got into the shower. I had my own shower. I couldn’t remember the last time I had had my own bathroom. I was in heaven, and I never wanted to leave.

When I was showered and everything had been packed away, I had prolonged the inevitable for long enough now. It was time to call Max. He still owed me some money, and I knew he would have it on hand. If I could just get that money now, then I would figure out what to do for next month.

I opened his contact and typed a message.

Hey, it’s Lily. Meet me at this location in 30 minutes. We need to talk.

I pressed send and then followed with the location. My heart was beating so fast I could hear the hard beats in my ears. chest.

A few seconds later my phone buzzed. I looked at the screen and saw his reply.

Be there in 5.

Five minutes?! I hadn’t anticipated him taking that short of time. I had dated Max for just over a year but that didn’t mean that he didn’t still intimidate me. He was a scary man. I knew that. Hell, the whole town knew that. I guess that was part of the reason I was so drawn to him. I liked the dangerous aspect of who he was.

I made my way downstairs and went to sit on the porch. I was too anxious to sit inside, and I needed the cool fall air. The sun was about to set, and the sky was painted a different array of pinks and oranges.

My eyes wandered around the neighborhood. The one thing I noticed about this place was that it was peaceful. My eyes wandered to my new next-door neighbor's house. Ethan Masters. The man who had captured my heart at five years old and hadn’t let go of it ever since.

It was stupid, a silly school girl crush that I had thought would fade. Spoiler, it never faded. With each passing day my heart grew fonder of one Ethan Masters. He was everything I ever wanted. He was always everything I could not have — the joys of your crush being your brother’s best friend.

I heard the rev of a motorcycle, and I had been around it enough times to know that it was Max. My back stiffened, as I prepared to see the psycho ex whose home I had trashed before I dumped him via a note stuck to his broken door.

In my defense, I had been slightly tipsy at the time.

Max came into view and parked his motorcycle at the end of the driveway. He removed his helmet and hopped off his bike. His icy blue eyes narrowed at me, as I made my way to where he stood.

“Hey,” I said in a soft tone. I didn’t know what I was walking into.

“What do you want?” He leaned against his bike. He was wearing his usual black get-up. Black jeans, a black shirt, and rings on his fingers. He had dyed his hair to black again. His once blonde locks were completely gone.

“How have you been?” I was beating around the bush.

He crossed his arms over his chest, causing his muscles to bulge out. He let out a dark laugh that had me second guessing my decision of inviting him here.

“What do you want, Lilian?”

I breathed a heavy sigh and braced myself for what I was about to say.

“You still owe me money from that time I worked at Grove. I need the money, so if you could get it to me that would be great.”

His icy blue eyes darkened. “You want me to give you money even after you trashed my apartment like a fucking psychopath?”

“You and I both know at you deserved it, Max, after what you did with Abby at the Grove.”
