He rolled his eyes. “I always used to feel like you were created specifically for me. Like God made you to be my perfect puzzle piece.”

His words had my heart soaring. “And now?”

“I still feel the same. I know that you have been through hell with Arthur and all he put you through. You had to carry a lot on your shoulders because, at the time, you felt you needed to. But I’m here now, Dan. Let me be that pillar that you need in your life.

“We can take it as slow as you want to. I am a patient man. I waited this long for you. I just want you to know that you don’t have to be strong on your own anymore. I am here, baby. Let me help you carry the load. I guess what I’m trying to say is, Daniella Anderson, I am head over heels in love with you.”

I gasped.

“You don’t have to say anything. I don’t expect you to just awaken these feelings overnight, but I just want you to know where my head and heart are.”

“I know I was blind before,” I said softly, bringing my hand to cup the side of his face. “But I’m not blind now. I see you now, Gavin Hendricks, and I’m sorry I didn’t see you before.” All these years. All that time I had wasted with pointless people when the perfect person had been right in front of me. I felt like a fool but I was done being stupid now.

I stared deeply into his eyes letting every last wall I had crumble to the floor. I hoped that he could see everything I was feeling at that moment.

“You are my peace and safety. Somewhere along the way in this loud and chaotic world, you became my serenity. You became my stability in this destabilized world. You make me want to be vulnerable. You make me want to tear my walls down, and I am willing to let you in. Just be patient with me, please. My heart’s been closed for a while but I’m willing to let you in because you are worth the vulnerability and the risk.” And he was. If I would risk my heart being broken again, I would take that leap with Gavin.

He brought his lips down to me and kissed me intensely. There was no tongue or anything of the sort but, for some reason, this kiss felt like more. It felt more than this moment. It felt like a promise.

When he pulled away, he had a smile on his face. “So, we are doing this?”

I nodded. “Just don’t break my heart.”

“I would never dream of it. I will treasure a gift like that from now until my dying breath. And if you want, you can break my heart. You can shatter it all into a billion pieces. I would put it back together and still offer it to you because you are worth being broken for. Ruin me in every way you see fit, Daniella Anderson.

My heart hammered in my chest.Ruin me.

I kissed him, allowing myself to get lost in his taste. The words were on the tip of my tongue. Three words, eight letters, but they were trapped in my throat. If I was being honest, they scared me, and I knew, if I said them, it would make everything all too real.

When we pulled away, his green eyes were sparkling. “Daniella Anderson, my gorgeous girlfriend, would you allow me to rock your world?”

There was a wave of uneasiness in his voice.

I nodded. “We are.”

Gavin Hendricks would be my ruin, but I was ready. I wanted to fall into him and give him all parts of me, including the ugly parts.
