It was only three in the afternoon, and we still had daylight. I was in no rush to head back home, and Axel seemed like a bundle of energy. Once we were all buckled in the car, I turned to the back and looked at my son in his booster.

“Where to?”

“Benji’s!”

Both Gavin and I laughed because that was the most obvious choice. We didn’t even need to ask. Gavin revved the engine to life.

I finally switched on my phone and looked down to see Marcus’ name flashing on the screen.

“Hey, we just landed.”

I could hear screaming in the background and what sounded like the throwing of things all over the place.

“Marcus?”

“Yeah. Maddy is in labor, and we are heading to the hospi—”

“Marcus! Get off the damn phone and take me to the hospital! This baby is trying to be birthed on the kitchen floor. Let’s. Go.”

“What?!” I exclaimed.

“I’m going into labor, Danny! I love you and all, but I’m going to need Marcus to hang up, so he can get me to the hospital. Ah! Fucking hell, this baby wants to rip me in two!”

“Yeah, I got to go,” Marcus drew out. “Meet us by the hospital.”

Before I could respond, he hung up.

“What’s wrong?” Gavin asked still not having moved the car.

“We need to go to the hospital. Maddy is in labor, and I think she could deliver at any moment from the sound of it.”

“Okay,” he said in a calm voice. “Looks like we won’t get to go to Benji’s today, little guy. But you do get to meet your cousin, though.”

“Aww, but why? Tell the baby no.”

“I wish it worked that way, sweetie.” I laughed softly.

Gavin raced us to the hospital. We didn’t even get a chance to drop our bags or even shower after the flight. I didn’t want to miss my big brother’s moment. This was something that he was going to treasure for the rest of his life, and I wanted to be a part of it.

When we arrived at the hospital, we walked into the waiting room. We made our way to the reception and found my mother and father already there.

“Oh, honey.” She enveloped me in a hug. “How are you doing? I know you haven’t had the easiest of weeks, either.”

I waved her off. “We can talk about that later, mom. Right now, let’s just focus on Marcus.”

“Okay.” Then her eyes cut behind me. “Gavin? Gavin Hendricks? Is that you, my boy? When did you get back into town? How are Marge and Dave? I haven’t seen them in ages.”

My mother was firing questions at him left, right, and center, and then I realized that they were unaware of the development between the two of us.

“Uh yeah.” I laughed nervously. “Mom, dad, Gavin is sort of, kind of my boyfriend now.”

“Your what?” They both said in unison.

My parents blinked before my mother broke first.

“Thank Jesus! I had lost hope for the two of you after you moved away, but now I see that fate did its thing. I’m a hugger, Gav, you know this. Bring it in.” She pulled him into a tight bear hug. “And you, my favorite grandson. How are you today? You don’t greet your nana anymore?”

Wow. She was taking this better than I had expected.
