“Hi nana,” Axel said, a little deflated. He was still upset that we couldn’t go to Benji’s.

Then my father stepped forward and held his hand out. “I hope you are treating my baby girl right, son. I may have known you since you were yay high, but you are still dating my daughter. She is my entire world.”

“Hey.” My mother playfully slapped my father. “I thought I was your world.”

“No honey, you are my whole soul and heart.”

My mother rolled her eyes, but I didn’t miss the slight tinge that overtook her cheeks. I loved their relationship, especially the banter they had with each other. They complimented each other perfectly, and it was what I hoped and yearned for between Gavin and me.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” the nurse said from behind the desk, “you were the one asking for Maddison Anderson?”

“Yes.” My mother whirled around, giving the woman in scrubs her full attention.

“She is on the maternity floor in room 324 but unfortunately there are no visitors apart from the father permitted right now. But you are welcome to go wait in the maternity waiting room on the third level.”

“Thank you, dear.” Mom turned back to us. “Come on, everyone. We have a baby to meet.”

We made our way up the elevator. The elevator was dead silent. All of us were completely lost in our separate thoughts. Then, Axel was the one who had to break the seriousness.

“Why did aunty Maddy haves to have the baby today. I. Want. Benji’s.”

“We will get your Benji’s after this little guy, okay?” Gavin kissed Axel’s cheek which Axel nodded to and placed his head on his dad’s shoulders.

That was the first time I referred to Gavin as Axel’s dad. Anyone with eyes could have seen it, they were made for each other. My mother and father also saw it, as they stared at Gavin and their grandson in awe.
