“Shhh,” Lily said in a gentle voice. “We just needed you to calm down. Rest for a little bit.”

“Gavin.” My eyelids felt heavy, and the world around me was fading. I tried to fight sleep but it was overpowering me.

“Gavin will be fine.”

“Axel,” I whispered.

“He is fine, too.” Her voice was so distant, I couldn’t quite register it. Then after a few more moments, the world around me turned black, and I was forced into a rest I did not want. I only hoped that I could clutch onto the ring in my sleep. I couldn’t lose the ring.

The first thing I noticed when I came were the hushed murmurs beside me. They were penetrating through my peace.

“You need to go lay down. You just had a baby.” It was Marcus’ voice.

“Marcus,” Maddy said in a warning tone, “she is my sister, too, and I want to check on her. Besides, she deserves to meet her nephew.”

“For fuck sake, Mads. She isn’t in a coma. They just gave her some relaxant.” This time it was Lily who spoke. “Go rest, woman. You gave birth yesterday. Surely there is some kind of rule against you walking.”

“I’m sure there is,” Marcus said. “Babe, she is still asleep. Come on.”

“No! I need her to open her eyes for me, then I can go. You all hid the fact that this all happened while I was in labor. I wasn’t there for her then, but I will be damned if I don’t at least see her open her eyes now. Danny! Wake. The. Fuck. Up. Ryan needs to meet his favorite aunty.”

“Hey,” I heard Lily and Jade protest.

“Shut up. I’m just trying to get her to wake up,” she hushed them. “Danny! Gavin and Axel need you!”

That did it. My eyes snapped open and immediately I was greeted with Maddy’s lovely face. She looked like a bird had nested in her hair, and I could see the fatigue in her eyes. She was barely holding on.

“You know,” I said in a low tone. “You are so loud for no damn reason.”

Maddy beamed down at me. “I knew I could get you to wake up. How are you feeling?”

“Like I’ve slept a week.” I looked around the room at everyone. Everyone seemed to be there except for my son and parents. “Axel?”

“Axel is with mom and dad. He needed to be away from here. They will be back later on today.” Marcus looked me up and down as if to assess for injuries. “You had me scared there, Dan.”

“Yeah, what he said. Had I known the asshole was here, I would have paused labor and come and beat his ass for you. Gavin is fine. He is awake and talking again, and he’s been asking about you. Unfortunately, he is hooked up to machines, so he has to stay put. But I promised him that, before I made it back to my bed, I would get you.”

I sprang up in my bed. “Can I go to him now?”

“Yes, you can. And by the way, it’s a boy.” She rolled her eyes. “I know you didn’t ask, but I wanted to tell you before you go see your man..”

“Can someone help me up, please?” I held my hand out to Marcus who seemed like the best choice rather than the woman who had just pushed a human out of her body. Everything felt sore, but I didn’t care. I just needed to go and see Gavin.
