Chapter 26 - Gavin: Ask Me

I hated it here. I was hooked up to these machines, and I couldn’t go anywhere. My body didn’t even feel like my own. I had tried multiple times to get up, but it just wasn’t working for me. The doctors had told me if I overstrained myself, then I would likely rip my stitches and then I would be back to square one.

Danny was outside the damn door I was staring at right now. Maddy had told me that she had had some kind of breakdown, and they had drugged her, so she would go to sleep. I didn’t know how to feel about that one, though. One part of me was happy they had put her at ease, but then there was another part of me, the selfish part, that wished she hadn’t had the breakdown and was at my side right now. I didn’t know for how long she would be out.

Maddy had promised me she would get her here, but the woman was high on hormones after giving birth and was probably sent back to her bed.

I remembered when I first came to, the first sound I heard was her voice telling me to stop playing dead and wake up. The comment was unnecessary, but it had been highly effective.

It had been almost two hours since Maddy came to see me, and I was suffering slowly but surely. I didn’t know a damn thing about what was going on outside my room. I couldn’t even see my son. He had been taken home by Danny’s parents and it was for the best. But having him and Danny close by would have made the healing process go by a lot quicker. I was sure of it.

The doorknob twisted, and I waited in anticipation, hoping it was Danny but I was thoroughly disappointed when I saw who it was. My nurse.

“How are you feeling Mr. Hendricks?” She smiled, trying to be polite. “Any pain?”

“I just want to be able to leave this room. I need to get to my girlfriend, Daniella Anderson. I have been asking you people to let me go and see her.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that. You need to rest, and you are hooked up to too many machines for us to transport you anywhere right now. We need to wait until you are a little stronger before we attempt to move you anywhere.”

I scowled at the ceiling. “Then can someone bring her here? Or at the very least, can someone wheel me wherever she is?”

“I’m right here.” My neck snapped in the direction of the door, and I felt all the anxiety and frustration leave my body. She was here.

My eyes roamed over her body, checking if she was truly okay. She was still in the same sweats she had worn when we first arrived at the hospital but she didn’t look like there was any bodily harm. Her eyes filled with tears as she looked at me in my bed.

“Come here.” My voice was thick with emotion. I won’t lie. There was a time I thought I wasn’t going to be able to see her, so I needed to touch her. I needed her skin to meet mine, so I knew that she was really there.

Danny walked into my room, her eyes never leaving mine. The tears spilled over, as she drew closer and closer to where I was. I reached out my arm that currently had a drip stuck in it. She placed her hand on mine and we both sighed in unison. Home.

“Hey, baby,” I murmured before she threw herself on top of me squeezing me tightly. Her body laid half on top of me, and her hair covered my face.

“I will give you two a minute,” the nurse, who I had forgotten was there, said. She opened and closed the door, leaving us alone.

We stayed embraced in that awkward position for a few moments longer.

Danny pulled away from me slowly and brushed away the few stray tears that had left her eyes.

“You almost died,” she said.

“Not really,” I said with a teasing smile.

She slapped my shoulder playfully. “Don’t do that again. You scared me, Gavin.”

“I was just trying to protect you. I couldn’t let that creep get away with doing what he wanted to do to you.”

“I know.” She placed her palm over my heart. “I thought you would die on that operating table.”

“Where is the faith, Dan?” I chuckled, trying to make light of the situation. “You know that it would take more than that to get rid of me, right? You are stuck with me for life.”

“You promise?” Her blue-gray eyes pierced into my green ones, and the world stood still. She was the only thing I saw and the only thing I needed to see. With her, my world was complete. There was no fear or hesitation. From the word go, I just knew that this was the woman for me. Our paths needed to diverge for some time, but eventually, we found our way back to one another.

“I swear it on my life. You are it for me, Danny. There is no one else that I would rather be with. I want to share every moment with you. I want to walk through every storm with you. I want to share every good thing with you. I want you, and I want Axel. I want all three of us to be one happy family.”

“I want all of that with you, too.”

She pressed her lips against mine and kissed me. She sighed into me. I felt the same way. Her lips were home for me. She was home for me.

She pulled away but only slightly so she could look into my eyes. Her hand traveled into my hair massaging my scalp gently. I closed my eyes enjoying the feel of her hand in my hair.
