Chapter 27 - Danny: Family

Six months later

“Ryan,” Maddy complained. “I just got you cleaned up, now you spit all over your cute little swimsuit.”

“This is why I said he doesn’t need to be wearing all that fancy crap. He is six months old, Maddison,” Marcus said, holding Axel on his shoulders in the pool.

Maddy and Marcus had moved out of the main house at the ranch after they had finished rebuilding their home. It was understated, yet luxurious. I loved it. They even had a pool.

“My child will only have the very best this world has to offer. I refuse for him to be some basic bob like the rest of these others.” Maddy looked to her baby boy who was cooing at his mother. “See. He agrees. He knows taste when he sees it.”

I rolled my eyes and went back to sunbathing in my chair. It was the middle of spring, and the heat was in full force in Riverroad. It got hot enough to warrant pool days.

Marcus, Axel, and Grayson played in the pool while Lily, Jade, and I bathed in the sun, trying to get our tans on. Maddy descended the porch stairs with Ryan in hand and made her way to the pool.

She was rocking a two-piece, and I might say she was rocking it well. You wouldn’t have been able to tell that she had just given birth six months ago. It was unfair. It took me two full years to feel like I was myself again, body-wise.

“Where did you say Gavin was?”

“He went to get Callum from the airport. He wanted to co-visit for the weekend.”

“Shut up!” Maddy exclaimed. “You are only telling me now that Callum Chambers, theCallum Chambers, is coming to my home?! I didn’t even clean my house properly today.”

I slid my sunglasses down the bridge of my nose and looked at her. “Your house is fine, and he is just a normal guy. Insanely gorgeous but still a normal guy.”

“Gorgeous is an understatement, in my opinion,” Jade said from beside me. “He is a tall glass of lemonade on a hot summer’s day.”

“Your husband is right here, woman,” Grayson called from the pool, displeased by Jade’s obvious swooning.

“Mama, look!” Axel called to me from the pool.

“Yes, baby.”

Axel tapped his uncle's shoulder and then slowly got up onto Marcus’ shoulders. If I didn’t trust Marcus, I would have been having a heart attack.

After Axel was successfully standing on Marcus' shoulders, he was launched into the sky and then he landed on a cannonball in the water. He emerged out of the water after a few seconds and then swam to Grayson.

Axel was onto his daredevil phase, and I hated it. He wanted to try anything and everything that included danger and adrenaline. He was always up for an adventure and he was much like Gavin in that regard.

I loved watching their relationship grow as time moved on. They were two peas in a pod. A true father and son bond. There were even days that I was sure that Axel preferred Gav over me. They even had little inside jokes I wasn’t aware of. I was outnumbered.

“When are they meant to arrive?” Lily asked.

“Any moment now, I think. He left about an hour ago, so they should be here any minute now.”

I heard laughter coming from inside the kitchen and, when I looked back to the porch, I saw the two men we had just been talking about emerge.

“And here they are.” I stood from my seat and made my way over to them.

Callum was gorgeous, yes. But my eyes were only on Gavin. He was wearing a tight-fitting shirt that hugged every muscle on his body.

There were times I forgot that he was actually a personal trainer before he started working on the ranch. My mind ran rampant with a lot of inappropriate things I wanted to do to my fiancé.

Once they descended the stairs, Gavin enveloped me in his arms. My arms wound their way around his neck, and I pulled him in even closer. When he set me down, we stared at each other, the rest of the world fading. He crashed his lips down onto mine, and I was teleported to a new place.

“At least introduce me to everyone first,” Callum joked, causing us to laugh and break apart.

My cheeks were tinged red from embarrassment. “Sorry, sometimes we just get…carried away.”
