“Scoot over,” she whispered. “I know it may not be hospital policy, but I just want to lay down with you. Are you in any pain?”

“Nope.” It wasn’t a whole lie. Having her here was pain relief enough.

“Okay.” She smiled. I scooted over and created room for her, and she came to lay down beside me. She was careful enough not to hurt me. She placed her leg over mine and then placed her palm over my heart.

I rubbed my hand up and down her back in a soothing motion. I laid my head on top of hers digging my nose into her hair and breathing in her scent. I greedily breathed it in, making sure to commit her scent to memory. I never wanted to forget it.

Her hand drew comforting circles on my chest, and it wasn’t until I saw something on her finger glistening against the light did I still. She was wearing the ring that I had picked out for her.

I covered her hand with my own. “You found the ring?”

She raised her head and stared up at me. There was an emotion that was dancing behind her eyes that I couldn’t quite decipher.

“I did.” She looked down at her hand. “It’s perfect. You did great.”

I was silent for a moment. “I wanted to do something grand for you. Had what happened in California not happened, I would have done it that night. I had a whole plan, but then I had to go back to the drawing board after we came back. And then this happened, delaying the new plan I had come up with. I was going to ask you properly. I was going to make it a whole special moment for you.”

“I don’t need grand moments, Gav. Every moment I spend with you is special enough. You set my world on fire. Our love is that all consuming kind of love that warms you. You breathed life into me again when I thought I was as good as dead. Even if you had given me a plastic ring, I would have been overjoyed with that. It’s all about the measure of our love, Gavin, and nothing else. And I love you endlessly and unconditionally.”

Her words were doing something to my chest that I was not used to. She was setting my heart on fire in the best way possible.

“Are you proposing to me, Daniella Anderson?”

She let out a soft laugh and then pecked my lips. “I guess I kind of am, but unfortunately, I didn’t get you a ring.”

“I don’t need one.” My arm tightened around her waist. “It’s about our measure of love, right, my love?”

“Right.” She kissed me again. “But I would like you to ask me, though, just so we can tell Axel how his dad asked for his mom’s hand.”

“Well…” I cleared my throat. “I can’t really get up right now to go down onto one knee, but I can woo you with my words.”

“Yes.” She smiled. “Woo me.”

“Daniella April Anderson, you are the absolute love of my life. You are every breath that I take. I can’t live without you. I didn’t realize I was only surviving until the moment I finally met you. I fell in love with you when I was nine years old, even before I knew what the word love meant. You made every burden seem bearable and every moment feel like heaven. I cannot do this thing called life without you. So will you do me the extraordinary honor of being my wife and the mother of my children?”

“Hmmm…” She pretended to think it over.

“You’re killing me here, Dan.”

“Of course I will marry you, Gavin Robert Hendricks. I would choose you in this lifetime and every lifetime after that.”

“Now, you’re stuck with me.” I smirked. “Till death do us part.”

“What do you mean? I’m still yours in the afterlife too, Gav. This is a forever thing.”

“Forever.” I tested the word on my lips. “I like it.”

“Me too.” She beamed.

I knew forever with her would never be enough, but it was a good place to start.
