She takes another sip. “Truth or dare?”

I can’t help but laugh. “Isn’t that for kids who wanna trick their crush into kissing them?”

She raises a challenging brow. “Scared?”

She holds her challenging gaze with mine as I pull back another swig of beer, knowing I’m practically dancing with the devil right now, and I may get burned, but I can’t help myself but to accept as I ask, “Truth or dare?”

She holds my gaze, and I am all too aware of the counter that stands between us. “Truth.”

I nod, thinking. “Are you happy it’s just us here?”

The silence hangs as she thinks. A debate warring inside her mind on whether to tell the truth or lie is visible within her eyes as she looks at me before finally answering, “Yes.”

I let a small smile slip because even though it is torture for it just to be us, it’s always better when it’s just her and I like this. When it’s just us, it’s like she drops any facade she may have and gives me a peek behind the curtain that is her.

She sighs, flicking her hair over her shoulder, exposing more skin before leaning forward. “Truth or dare?”

I take another swig. “Truth.”

She gives me a wicked smile, which sets my nerves on edge. “Areyouhappy that it’s just us?”

“Yes,” I say without hesitation, hoping she picks truth so I can ask what I have burning inside me to know. “Truth or dare?”

She keeps her eyes on mine. “Truth.”

I laugh, happy she picked truth, but wondering if either of us are gonna be game enough to pick dare. I look at her as I ask, “Who were you talking about on the phone earlier? About begging?”

Her smile slips from her lips and a nervous fear takes over as she drops her eyes to look at her feet, sucking in a breath before she looks back at me with a serious expression that only increases my own nerves. I know having this information won’t help me, that I will still want her, but maybe it is what I need to keep me away from her all vacation. If I know she is into someone else and who that person is, maybe it will be easier.

I brace myself as I see her lips start to open and close, as if trying to figure out the best way to respond until I watch her back suddenly stiffen, pushing her shoulders back and looking at me as she says as confidently as she can, “You.”

CHAPTER 42

MIA

He stands there for a long moment, blinking before finally breaking the silence that hangs between us. “What?”

I clench my fists, swallowing my nerves and fear, bracing for a possible rejection because there is no going back now. “I was talking to Ava about you.” I clear my throat. “Truth or-”

“Don’t change the subject, Mia. I’m gonna need more than that,” he says, his voice abrupt and his face frowning down at me. All I wanna do is shrink back into some shell and stay there, but instead, I put on my big girl panties and suck it up. We are gonna be doing this my way.

“If you wanna know, you gotta play.”

He holds my gaze with his, firm and unwavering. At first, I think he is going to say no, but he simply nods, his jaw tensed and his fists clenched. It’s quiet for a moment until I see his eyes turn darken as he looks at me. It's almost devilish, but it doesn't make me wanna run, it makes me want to go to him. I stayed put though, as he growls, “You wanna play? Fine.” He cocks his head, waiting, and I remember it was my turn, so I ask and without looking away, he says, “Truth.”

“How do you feel about me?”

My mouth is dry as I wait, his eyes focused on me, but his mind is busy as I see his thoughts race. I hope that he is actually truthful as I have already laid myself out.

He sighs before shaking his head. “Mia-”

“Tell me.”

He just stares at me, and I think he will ignore my request until, without looking away from me, he speaks. “You’re the best person I know. You’re strong and you care so much about others, even when you are in pain. You can be funny, and I like how you light up when you hear a song you like. When you smile, I want to smile and do anything to make you smile again. I always want you with me, Mia.”

I stand there, taking in every word, trying to figure out what this means. The way he talks about me, it feels like more than friends, but he didn’t exactly say the words. I nod, accepting this, knowing that I will need to be the one to change up the game to get any real answers, so when he asks, without hesitation, I say, “Dare.”

He blinks, but his face remains neutral, unmoving as he thinks until I watch his eyes move over me, conflict warring in his eyes as he shakes his head. “Mia, I think we need to stop.”
