“You didn’t have to stay in the hospital?” Hank asked.

“No.”

“He left on his own, without his doctor’s approval,” Rachel inserted again and Gavin laughed. “He also had some things to say to the doctor on his way out.”

“I bet,” Kane laughed. “Good job, Payne. You achieved your goal with the good Senator.”

“Thank you, sir,” she responded, the glow of his approval warming her.

“About that, Kane.” The Senator glanced over at Rachel. “I’d like her to stay on for a while if it’s okay with you.”

“Really? You anticipating more threats?” Kane asked, his eyes twinkling.

"No, but I've kinda gotten used to her being around. And Gavin," he rushed to add.

Rachel, surprised at his statement, glanced at Gavin. He shrugged and made a face. “I hadn’t heard of it either.”

“What do you think, Payne? You want to stay on with the Senator?” Kane tilted his head toward her.

“I wouldn’t mind helping him a bit longer,” she stuttered, unsure of what her role would become in this post threat world.

“It might not be as a Shadow Ops agent, though.” Kane considered her then smiled. “But I have a feeling you might be of more use to the Senator there.”

Her brow furrowed, she tried to figure out what he was saying, other than she was fired apparently. "Yes, sir."

“Gavin?” Hank chimed in. “You’ve got to report back to your superiors, don’t you?”

Gavin nodded. “I already have. I have a few more weeks here with the Senator.” He glanced at Rachel then continued. “I’m leaving the military.”

There was a moment of stunned silence before Hank and Kane both offered him a job. The Senator held up a hand. “Nope. He’s going to work for me. I’ll need someone like Gavin to help me if I’m to get my goals across with the subcommittee.”

“And what are those, Gray?”

“I’m not entirely sure. And then, there’s the question everybody’s asking.”

“If you’re going to run for President,” Rachel said, smiling. He nodded gravely, the only one in the group who wasn’t sure he’d make a great leader.

"So, it's done," Hank said. "We can put this thing to bed."

“The drug ring?” Fanning asked and waggled her head. “Almost. The other leaders have to be found and arrested.”

"I'll be calling you about that, Agent," Kane commented, his face serious again.

Rachel looked at her soon to be ex-boss. He had an agenda and wouldn't be satisfied until he'd fulfilled his goals.

They closed out the meeting shortly after and Gavin stood. “What are we going to be doing for you, Senator?”

Mitchell rubbed the back of his neck then grinned bashfully. “I’m not sure yet, but I do know I trust you two more than anyone, save my daughter. I’ll need you both if I’m to survive this next year or so.”

“Are you considering running for President, sir?” Rachel asked and he shrugged before wandering off to his office to field calls.

Gavin tucked his closed laptop under his arm and put the other one around Rachel’s waist. “What about Kane? Are you going to go back to Shadow Ops or stay here?”

She smiled and leaned into his warmth. “If I want danger and excitement, I think this is the place for me.”

The End
