Chapter Twenty-eight

Lock

Ayearago,Elenastormed into my awareness. Back then, I never would’ve believed how easy it was to be with her. Even a couple months ago, I wouldn’t have believed it.

I hadn’t known her then, not the way I did now. Last week, she gave me her closest held secrets, and I’d given her a new one of mine in return. I’d been worried things might’ve been shaky after that, that we’d slide into a dark place and not be able to find our way back to the light, but that hadn’t happened. All Elena needed to be happy was a steady dose of my attention, orgasms, coffee, and snuggles, which I was more than fucking willing and pleased to provide. We’d spent every night together since then, chasing more and more of the light. In the back of my mind, I knew I was getting to the place where I wasn’t going to want to let her go, but I had no desire to stop.

It was Friday afternoon, and we were stretched out on her sectional, her legs over mine, my feet resting on the coffee table. I picked up her ankle to kiss the delicate bone. Goose bumps instantly appeared on her calves.

“Let’s go for a drive,” I said.

She perked up. “I get to go on a famous Lachlan Kelly drive?”

I ran my palm along the front of her smooth calf. “It’s not that I haven’t been taking you. I haven’t been going on drives at all lately. Haven’t been antsy.”

“Are you antsy now?”

“Little bit. I want to go see some stars, but I want to do that with you, if you’re willing.”

She sat up, her feet on the ground. “I’m readyandwilling. Let’s go.”

“All right. Grab a sweatshirt and whatever else you need to sleep with me tonight. I’m gonna run home and take care of something. I’ll meet you by my truck in ten minutes.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Why do I feel like this drive is more than a drive?” She gasped. “Are you going to propose? No, wait, it’s way too soon for that.” She gasped again. “Are you going to drive me to a remote location and murder me?”

Grabbing her arm, I yanked her over my lap and spanked her sassy little ass. She screeched with laughter, wiggling her butt at me, taunting me.

“That’s all you have for me, big man?”

I smacked her cheek. “That’s all you’re getting from me, sweet girl. I need this butt sitting in my truck. Can’t light it up too red.” One more swat, then I lifted her into a sitting position and pressed my lips to hers. “You’re a madwoman.”

“I know.” She grinned into another kiss. “Does this mean no murder?”

“Nah. No proposals either. Sometimes a drive is just a drive.”

With the windows rolled down, we drove down the Pacific Coast Highway. Late Friday afternoon traffic sucked, but we weren’t in a rush. The scenery was stunning, the music Elena chose was tolerable, and the girl was handsy. I could’ve sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic with her all day.

Her feet were propped on the dash, toenails painted the palest pink. I knew she’d gotten her nails done a couple days ago so they were shiny and fresh. It was rare they weren’t finely polished and perfectly filed. She never gave me shit about the oil under my own nails. Last week, when she’d asked if she could give me a manicure, I’d said yes. This was following the best blow job of my life. I would have agreed to a lot I normally wouldn’t have.

I was glad I had. She took her time, scrubbing away the stains that she could, kissing each of my fingertips when she was finished with them. That had been a fucking awesome night. I was thinking this one might top it.

“What is the best place you ever ended up on a drive?” she asked.

“Hmmm…down here?”

“Sure.”

“I don’t know. I like when I discover something I never would have if I hadn’t gone off the beaten path. There was this cove filled with tide pools I happened upon at low tide—one of the prettiest places I’ve ever been. I’ll take you. Another time, I drove around Venice Beach and wound up a few miles away at this burger shack. Best burger of my life. I took Theo and Helen there under the promise they’d never tell another soul about it.”

“Will you take me there?”

I glanced at her, taking her hand in mine to rub my thumb over her smooth nails. “Will you make the same promise?”

“Of course. I’m really good with secrets, and if I’m being honest, I’m having a jealousy flare that Helen’s been somewhere with you I haven’t.”

Traffic came to a standstill, so I turned my head, taking her in. She wasn’t joking.

“You know I don’t have feelings like that for Hells,” I said.
