She made a circle over her head. “The things that go on in here aren’t rational. I know you aren’t into her like that. Believe me, I would’ve chopped off her gorgeous hair if I thought that was happening. I just want to go on your favorite drives with you to the places that made you happy. That’s what the jealousy is about.”

Jesus. If we weren’t sitting in traffic, I would have taken her over my lap and spanked the living hell out of her for saying something so damn sweet. For making me feel like a little kid who wanted to drag the pretty girl around to show her all his toys. For making me want things that weren’t going to be possible.

“I’ll take you to all my places. And we’ll find some new ones.”

“Good.” She squeezed my hand, then took hers back to pull her hair into a braid. I watched her crisscross the three sections, completely forgetting we were on the road until the car behind me honked.

“We should play Twenty Questions,” she announced when she was finished.

“I’m in. You want to start?”

“You go. Think of something and I’ll ask the questions.”

I tapped my head, instantly picturing her pajamas. No idea why they’d popped into my mind, other than I always had a steady rotation of Elena images passing through: naked, pajamas, sundresses, more naked.

“Go,” I said.

She hummed. “Is it an animal?”

“No.”

“Food?”

“Nope.”

“My tits?”

I barked a laugh. “It wasn’t, but now it is.”

She smacked my arm, laughing too. “Shut up. Is it a vehicle?”

“No.”

“A person?”

I shook my head.

She chewed on her bottom lip.

“Are you out of questions?”

She shushed me. “I’m trying to get in my Lachlan Kelly headspace. It’s full of engines and cattle and power tools, so—”

“Don’t forget your tits. My headspace is covered in your tits.”

She smacked me again. “We’re playing a game here. Stop trying to distract me so you can win. Is it something in my house?”

“Yes.”

She clapped. “Look at me. I’m the boss at this game.”

“You still have fourteen questions.”

“Oh, I won’t need them.” She ran the end of her braid along her lips. “Is it furniture?”

“No.”

“Is it in my bedroom?”
