“All right, all right.” Jimmy pounded on the edge of the console like a drum. “From the top?”

“From the top,” Alex agreed.

He ran through the song from top to bottom three more times, adjusting little things each round. After the third round, Alex came out of the booth for a break, and I had to cling to my chair so I didn’t throw myself at him.

His hair was disheveled from the headphones, and his jeans were riding dangerously low because he kept shoving his hands in his pockets. I’d never seen him look so cute and sexy. I couldn’t even fathom how I’d been able to shut myself off to him all these years.Hewas the very rhythm of my heart.

Maeve, Santi, Diego, and Mo fawned over him while I hung back, swiveling back and forth in my chair with nervous energy. June had tucked herself so quietly in a corner, I barely noticed her there, but when I caught her eye, she smiled bright.

“You didn’t text me,” Jimmy said.

“Oh, no, I had a busy weekend.”With my boyfriend. P.S. he loves me. Skedaddle.

He leaned into my space, effectively blocking my view of Alex. “I’m only in town for a couple more weeks. It gets pretty lonely in my Airbnb. Maybe you can show me the city next weekend?”

I had to give Jimmy credit for his audaciousness. The man was bicoastal, so although New York wasn’t his permanent address, he spent three to four months here every year. He knew the city and didn’t need me to show it to him.

“I’ll have to check my schedule.” I hated to say no outright, since I’d have to see him around, but I might have to if he didn’t take a hint. Pushing out of my chair, I announced, “I’m running to the bathroom. Be right back.”

I made it as far as the door to the restroom before familiar arms locked around my waist, dragging me into the room. The light came on automatically, but I didn’t need it to know who held me. My head fell back on Alex’s chest, and I tipped my chin to kiss the side of his neck.

“You killed it,” I said.

“Thanks, Boo. The thing is, you’re killing me.”

“I am?”

He spun me around, cupping my face. “Yeah. You are. I’m in there, singing this song I wrote with you in my head, and you’re mine, but sometimes it feels likethat’sonly in my head too.”

“It’s definitely not,” I argued. “If it is, then we’re the same kind of crazy.”

“I know it’s not. But when I have to watch that asshole hit on you nonstop, it makes me lose my mind. It took all the control I had to not say anything in there.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll go.” That was the last thing I wanted to do, but I also didn’t want Alex to worry over me when this day was all about him and the band creating his song.

He touched his lips to mine, at first soft, then he kissed me like he was about to leave for his mission to the moon and it would be a year before we were together again. And I kissed him like the girl who would wait for him to come home each and every time.

“Don’t go,” he murmured when we broke apart. “I’ll get over it. I want you here.”

“Okay. I want to be here.”

From the vibration in his chest, that seemed to please him immensely.

He went back first, and I followed a few minutes later. Everyone was standing around, clearly still breaking. My eyes landed on June’s, still tucked in her corner. I went to her, tugging her hands.

“Come stand by me,” I insisted, and she came without argument.

The band stood in a loose circle around the coffee table, which was always piled with snacks. Alex held position between my brother and Maeve, which happened to be directly across from me. I smirked at him, and he snarled at me. Nothing unusual for us, but we both knew how much more laid behind those surly expressions.

“I took your number, by the way,” June said.

Pulling my attention from Alex, I turned to her, grinning. “Did you? Will you use it?”

“Probably.” She cocked her head, her pretty eyes narrowing behind her glasses. “You’re nicer than you seem.”

I snorted, my eyes rolling toward the ceiling. “I get that a lot. I have RBF.”

She huffed a soft laugh. “I have that too. Only mine is resting blush face.”
