I tapped the window as I thought of what I should do next. I wasn’t about to lead him on, but I knew I might need him. Especially any information he might have. “Have you seen the news?”

“I have, so I guess I should say congratulations on your engagement.”

“Thanks,” I said quietly, not wanting to sound too cheery.

“I should have known you were playing us.”

“I wasn’t playing you.” That wasn’t a total lie. “I wanted to know my family and where I came from. The fact that you and I met, well, let’s just say I don’t regret our time together.”

“Mm, and I won’t lie and say it wasn’t disappointing to hear. Elio is a lucky man.”

“I’m lucky, too.” I waited for him to say something. “What will you do now?”

“Well, that’s reason number two why I called you. I’d been groomed to be the eyes and ears of Rome for the Coppolas, and now that position is gone. Though you have no reason to trust me, I wanted to see if you’d be willing to take me on?” He waited a beat. “You know, to let me come work for you, under the Capri rule.”

What?

“I get this might come as a shock, but I’m wasting my talent here and thought if you can’t beat the enemy, join the enemy.” I went silent. “I have no one left, Sienna, but I do have a head full of knowledge on the Coppolas that might help you out.”

“I’ll need to think about this.” He was right. I had no reason to trust him, and I certainly didn’t, but I needed time.

“I missed you,” he sighed. “Let me try that again. What I should say is you were different than any woman I’d been with. You’re more real and down to Earth. It was refreshing, and I just miss your company in general.”

I wished I knew how I should play it out. Did I turn him down flat, or should I play him along?

“I really enjoyed your company too. I was thankful you were there for me to talk to.” A reflection in the window had me whirling around to find Elio looking mad as hell.

I held up a finger to tell him one moment and to stay quiet, but he didn’t like it. I shook my head and pleaded with him to just give me a moment.

“Well,” Salvo misunderstood my silence and cleared his throat, “think it over, and I’ll be in touch.”

“I will. Talk to you soon.”

“Bye, Sienna.”

“Bye.” I hung up, and Elio crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow at me.

“Oh, yeah,” I laughed at him, “you think I’d be cheating on you after last night?”

“I know you’re not cheating, bella.” He followed me out of the room and down the stairs and into the kitchen. “But I know what you do to men. So, who was that?”

“Oh? Please enlighten me. What do I do to men?”

“Hey,” he trapped me at the counter with both hands on my waist and pushed his erection into my back, “this.”

“Says the man who is in love with me.”

“Mmm,” he kissed the side of my head and moved his arms around for a hug, “so in love.”

“Well, in that case, it was Salvo.” One moment his front was to my back, and the next I was spun around to face him.

“Salvo called you?”

“Yes.” I popped a grape in my mouth. “He wants to come work for us.” He laughed like I was crazy. “I don’t trust him either,” I swallowed the juicy pulp, “but if he’s desperate for work, maybe we can pull some helpful information out of him. Maybe we can find Rosa?”

“You’ll need to come at that very carefully.”

“Teach me, and I’ll do it.”
