He led me out onto the porch, which was strung with holiday lights and lined with icicles hanging off the roof. It had snowed last night, and I had to admit that it was nice to have a white Christmas again.

The air was cold, but Connor had grabbed our coats, and he draped mine over my shoulders before pressing his hand against my forehead.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Seeing if you’re warm,” he said, his fingers brushing gently along my cheek. “I think you’re sick.”

I laughed lightly, and he frowned.

“I’m serious,” he said, not looking the least bit amused. “You look a little pale.”

“That’s the nausea.”

His lips pursed. “I knew it. Should we go to the doctor?” He ran his hand through his hair, worry etched across his face. “No, wait, the doctors are closed today. The ER, then?”

“No,” I said gently, reaching out to take his hands in mine. He ran his finger over the engagement ring I was wearing, and I couldn’t wait until he had a wedding band of his own. “I don’t need a doctor, but I do have something to tell you.”

“What is it?” His panic flared again. “Are you okay?”

I remembered giving him a hard time about worrying too much when he insisted that we take the emergency bag with us to Colorado last year. It was in his nature to be anxious like this, and it was something that I loved about him.

“Connor, I’m fine. I promise. It’s just…” I hesitated, swallowing a lump in my throat.

I was ecstatic about the news I was about to deliver, and when I found out a couple of days ago, I couldn’t wait to tell him. It was his big Christmas surprise. But now, I was nervous. What if he wasn’t as happy as I was at this very unexpected change in our lives?

“Sweetheart, I’m on pins and needles over here,” he said gruffly. “Please, just tell me what’s going on.”

“I’m pregnant,” I blurted out, cringing at the ineloquent way the words came out.

“W-what?”

I couldn’t read his expression and that worried me, considering it wasn’t something we’d planned. “I said I’m pregnant,” I repeated, lifting my chin and staring into his eyes. “And I’m really happy about it, so if you—”

I was cut off as his lips landed on mine in a heated kiss that stole my breath. The next thing I knew, he’d lifted me off my feet and spun us around in a circle with laughter falling from his lips.

My heart leapt. Then, my stomach clenched.

“Oh God, put me down,” I said, and he did, just in time for me to recover. When I looked up at him as my nausea settled, he had a huge, elated grin on his face.

“I can’t believe I’m going to be a father,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.

I bit my bottom lip. “So, you’re happy?”

“Am Ihappy? Are you crazy?” He laughed and shook his head. “Of course I am! I can’t think of anything better than making you my wife and having a baby with you. Are you okay, though?” he asked, concern in his eyes.

“Yeah, it’s just morning sickness.” I grimace, placing a hand on my stomach again. “Turns out, it’s not just a morning thing. For me, it happens all day long.”

“I love you so much.” Connor pulled me into his arms, cradling me gently against his warm body. “I never would have thought that this Christmas could top last year’s, but you’ve done it.”

“We’vedone it,” I corrected, and he pressed a soft kiss to my forehead.

“Let’s go tell the family,” he said, taking my hand and leading me inside.

I thought back on the last year and how far we’d come. Who would have ever thought that I would find my happily ever after while snowed in with my boss?
