“Aye, I’m Cameron, but I have no idea who you are.” He stared at her like she’d lost her mind.

Miriam smiled. “Remember when you told me to find you a wife?” she asked. “Well, here she is!”

Cameron’s eyes narrowed, and it was obvious to Cassandra he was angry. “That’s a bunch of malarkey, Mother! You know I wasn’t telling you to send for a bride!”

Without another word, he strode from the house, and left Cassandra staring after him, wondering what she’d done wrong. If he didn’t want to marry her, then she would need to find someone else or go back to Beckham, and she was determined not to go home. No, she was in Montana to stay. It was too beautiful for her to even consider leaving.

When Miriam turned to her, she could see sadness in the older woman’s eyes. “He’ll come around,” she promised.

Cassandra sighed. “You sent the letter?”

“Yes. And I received the telegram as well. He needs a wife, and he agrees he needs a wife, but he told me that none of the women in Montana he’d tried to court were acceptable. So I sent for you.”

“What should we do now?”

Miriam smiled. “We measure you for the dress and we fix supper. I’ll show you your room. I got it ready for you because I thought you and Cameron might want a few days to get to know one another before you made your vows.”

Cassandra took a deep breath and was once again startled when she felt like she couldn’t breathe deeply enough. “I’ll follow your lead, Mrs. Royal.”

Miriam frowned. “I thought we’d decided you’d call me Ma or Miriam.”

“Not if we might not be related soon. It would be too informal.” Cassandra felt as if her heart was breaking, when she didn’t even know the man. But oh, the thoughts she’d had about him. She wasn’t a bunch of malarkey, and that’s all there was to it.
